I did it. I bought an Asus UX31 Ultra Slim. I got the 13" one. I would have preferred the 11" one but it was more than $300 above the price of the 13" one. Weird. Also weird... The cheapest price - online or off was at Office Depot. By more than $50. So I called the one closet to me to see if they had any. They did. One. So I got in the car and went and bought it.
Hilariously, I created quite a stir with the store staff as, apparently, this is exactly the computer they have all been drooling over and they were all very jealous. I promised them it was going to a loving home.
It is nice. Really nice. I've never bought any computer (or tablet for that matter) that came with a sleeve to carry it in. Even the two little dongles have a nice pouch that matches the sleeve.
The keyboard and mouse both feel nice and are easy. Easier, in fact, than the Lenovo which is touted for its keyboard. And while quite a bit thinner than the Lenovo, it does not get anywhere near as warm. Not even close. And it's very pretty. The screen is huge and bright and pretty. The rest of it is polished and pretty - silver. Even the intel and Windows7 stickers are not the usual garish colored ones but nice, silver ones. Pretty. I just unplugged the power cord after a full charge and I have 5 hours of battery left. Nice.
Oh and it came with an amazing amount of bloatware... nearly none. There's one piece of Asus 'entertainment' stuff that I'll kill. And I deleted the Microsoft Office trial. But, that was it. The rest is functional stuff. They even have a PDF reader that is not Adobe! The Asus toolset is pretty darned good.
I'm happy. Tomorrow I'll move the Lenovo over to replace the netbook. Then I'll sell the netbook to Amazon. The netbook is probably salvageable but it would take some major fiddling and the I would have a functioning crappy netbook.
Now it's time to download updates... while I knit.
