I just heard on the radio what yesterday's 'do' at the stadium was... it was the annual Bacon Bowl! This is a football game between the Seattle police and the Seattle firedepartment. It's been going on for more than 30 years. The name cracks me up.

Several years ago I was in a conversation with some young people at work who were confused by the name. I said 'you know, pigs... police....' I got very blank stares. So I got pedantic... 'In the olden days - the 60s - we called policemen pigs.' The kids went off on that. They said it was terrible and disrespectful (duh) and so mean and a good way to piss them off (duh duh)... Don't they teach the 60s in history in school??? They said they studied the 60s in school and learned all about the conflict in Vietnam and how no one appreciated what we did there and how no one had morals.

I was depressed for days. I did some research, however, and learned that at least in my sphere - this first group was a bit of an anomily. The other young people I asked had much more accurate knowledge of the 60's and knew exactly what the Bacon Bowl referenced - and got the joke.

I live on the 4th floor and moved in here 10 years ago. My friends, Sherry and Lee live on the 3rd floor and moved in here about the same time. We've been buddies ever since. When they go out of town (which is a lot) I take care of their two cats. When I go out of town (which is nearly never) they take care of my two cats. Years ago we were out drinking one night and I accused them of being Useless Lesbians.

I can't get make up tips from them because they are not lipstick lesbians. And they don't know one end of the hammer from the other. So I asked them how in the heck they ever go ttheir lesbian cards to start with and they did admit to being illegal.

Anyway... a couple of weeks ago I went to turn on the lights in the hallway which I never use and I couldn't figure out which switch ruled them. They are wall sconces. The switch at one end of the hall turns on one light and at the other end of the hall a switch turns on the other. But, no switch seems to turn on the ones in the middle.

So I sent an email to Lee and Sherry asking them where the switch is. This morning, my doorbell rings and it's Lee and she's got on this grungy, old tool belt and announces "Useful Lesbian To The Rescue"! I cracked up.

Not only that, at Sherry's suggestion we put new bulbs in the two fixtures and voila - the switches at both ends now work all of the lights.

They made me promise that I will swear to their handiness when I'm called to testify at their lesbian review hearing. I'm sill laughing.

My Mom asked me for an afghan to match her den. I started this way last Spring but had to have afghanis-interuptis when it just got too hot to work on it. Now it's finished and soon to be in the mail...

57" x 46" 18 skeins of Caron Simply Soft - 279 stitches #6 needles - Pattern is on p. 70 of Better Homes and Gardens Afghans to Knit and Crochet.

Jake cannot resist a newly finished project.

I truly do appreciate all of your comments on my knitting projects. They are always wonderful but please don't feel like you have to. I use LJ to catalogue my projects (via Memories). It's a great way for me to keep track of what I've done - how much yarn it took, # of stitches, etc.
