Phish

I got my first phish in my Gmail account today. It was the eBay - we need your credit card number updated one. I do not understand how somone unfamiliar with URL formation can know this is a hoax. My only clues were that I've never told eBay about my Gmail account and the URL the link led to was on the a .info domain. Now, really, how many people would - 1. catch the .info info and 2. know it's significance?

I think about my Mom. On the up side, I know she will never give out any passwords. She doesn't know them. She can't ever remember the difference between userid and password and she doesn't know which goes with which. Her system is set up so that she doesn't need to know. Yes there is a danger. Should some tech burglar come upon Charleston, SC, zone in on the retirement community, figure out which building is apartments, get in without keys and find his way up to Mom's 3rd floor unit - he can steal her blind electronically. It's a risk.

And the good news is that if she catches him, he won't get a time out. She raised her children before those came into vogue. He will, however, get grounded and likely have his allowance slashed.

I was just able to get to most of my friends groups to catch up. LJ withdrawal is just ugly and uncomfortable and sad. Is it over?

Work has been good lately. I'm getting to do a lot of stuff that I don't have a clue how to do. Figuring it out successfully is great fun. Today I had to edit a bunch of XML pages and create a couple of new pages and then magically turn them into mspx page so they render like regular web pages. I had no clue how to do it. I got a hint from someone passing in the hallway and noodled it out from there. I'm quite proud.

I want to understand more about XML and all it's relatives and how it works with RSS and all the various permutations. I get little peeps here and there and maybe someday I'll be able to put all the pieces together.

I'm on standby again for work this weekend. One of these days they are going to quit crying wolf. Wonder if it will be this weekend?

It's been delightfully cool here for the past few days. I know it won't last so I'm just trying to enjoy every second of it. I am going to stop. I'm making a stop at the library on the way home this afternoon.

Stephen called it. 3.9 quake 2:48 p.m. today at Mt. Ranier. Close enough for me to be impressed with his predicting abilities. And I'm grateful it wasn't bigger or closer!
