A week or so ago, there appeared a new face in the [livejournal.com profile] seattle community. It's a Seattle bus driver! [livejournal.com profile] luv_your_driver answer random musing and questions about the bus system in the community but also has his/her(?) own LJ for sharing the driver's point of view and it's great. When I first moved to Seattle I toured the city on weekends on the bus. For many years, the only way I knew how to get to various parts of the city was via the bus route! Most of our bus drivers are just fun and nice and caring. (Like that wonderful driver who wouldn't let me pay for the whole rest of the month when she found out I'd lost my bus pass. ) The few bad apples just make the rest look better.

My maternal grandma started it. She lived in Oklahoma City and was always a master at ingenious ways to entertain us. The Summer that Oklahoma City got their first air conditioned buses we were visiting her. I was probably 7 making my sister 6 and my brother 2. We all walked down to the closest bus stop and got onto the bus and rode it the entire circuit until we were back to where we had gotten on. It was wonderful. We all loved it. The driver was great fun and quite with Grandma's program. We wanted to do it every single day of the visit. It's a memory that I treasure.

I've often wanted to chat with drivers here in Seattle to find out about what it's like to be a driver but 1. realize it's not exactly a safe maneuver and 2. I'm pretty sure it's against the rules because of 1. But now [livejournal.com profile] luv_your_driver has fixed all that! This is a great and safe way to find out what's it's like in at least one driver's seat.

(And I'm using this bus picture specifically because I know it makes[livejournal.com profile] aellia smile.)

The latest email post card from bro included a t-shirt report:

Second best shirt seen on the strip last night:

I found Jesus. He was behind the couch.

Best one:

Rock is dead. Long live Paper and Scissors.

Bus Buddy!

Today must be my bus day. I went out (in the car) to run an errand and as I was coming out of the small store heading to my car another car pulled up with a woman riding shotgun and waving me down. It was my BUS BUDDY!!!

During my last stint at Microsoft, when I rode the bus every day, in the afternoons, there was a woman who became my bus buddy. She and I were the only two regular riders over the age of 30. We bonded. She got off at the first edge of Seattle and I got off at the other end of town but from Redmond to Seattle we chatted about this and that and whatever. We'd laugh and carry on. She was just fun.

She is my size and my age - only black. One day I she wasn't there waiting when the bus pulled up. The bus driver was one of the regulars - a really nice guy who was always kidding around. When I got on, he said 'hey, salt... where's pepper??!!' And about that time here she comes running up to the corner... When she got on he said 'ahhhh the set is back together again...'

When I left Microsoft, I left her and hadn't seen her since. Today, she peeled out of that car so fast and gave me the biggest hug! It was so great to see her. She's still riding the bus and misses me and I miss her. It was such a treat to see her. I forgot to ask her about Katrina - her husband and his family were from New Orleans. Her husband was driving her today so I know he's ok. I hope his family is. It was so good to run in to her, I'll have a smile on my face all day.

And you know... I don't even know her name.
