Every year they test the fire alarm system here. They put up a notice announcing the testing. Then on that day - they spend 3-4 hours sending piercing screeches throughout the building every 2-3 minutes while they check all 108 units to ensure it works. And I do mean screeches.

It started at 9 and it hurt. And it startled and for about 1 whole minute I was annoyed and then I thought...

Wow. I've been lucky to have always been at work on the days they did this before. Wait a minute... that's not right... I'm luckier now. I could leave if I want. Take my laptop to any one of a half dozen places with free wifi in a 4 block radius and work from there. Or I can sit here and with every screech remember how very very very lucky I am to get to be here and live here and work here or anywhere I want.

And, pretty soon the screeching stopped - well before the minimum 3 hours they predicted. All in all, I'm liking Fire Alarm Check Day and I look forward to next year's!

Work is good - plenty to keep me busy now. I still can't get over the day and night of it all. It's a lovely cool day. Something must be worth whining about but I'll be darned if it springs to mind.

I'm going to pop over to the deli and get me a reuben sandwich before I tackle this afternoon's web pages.

Another very busy day! With work left over for tomorrow.

My doctor was supposed to call me and tell me whether I need to keep taking the torpedo potassium thing. That's why she made me take the blood test yesterday. She said 'if you don't hear from me by 2 p.m., then call me'. I allowed as how that I thought that was a very flawed plan. So she said she would be sure and call. She goes on vacation tomorrow.

At 3, I called and left a message with the person who answered the phone. I told the person that all I wanted to know was whether the doctor wanted me to keep taking the potassium. It was VERY clear from listening to this woman that likely my message would never get to anyone in a position to do anything about it.

Sure enough, no word at all. I guess I keep taking it. Lesson learned. Do NOT count on follow through with this doctor and her office. Along with Do NOT expect to be seen anywhere near the appointed time is kind of working up to two full strikes. I hate to start from scratch again. Maybe it will get better.

I'm taking the night off - some TV and some baseball and some teddy bear knitting.
