The Kiwi friend coming to visit today, was here on the 4th of July once before.  I think it may well have been the first time he had ever been outside of New Zealand (except for trips to Australia). It is fascinating to see the 4th of July through the eyes of someone who has no idea what's going on or why.  I took him over to Bainbridge Island (a commuter sleeper island a ferry boat ride away). It's a small town with a small town 4th of July parade. And then we came back and sat at the waterfront to watch fireworks (this was back when they did them in the bay which is a few blocks from my house).

I'm pretty sure his head was raw from scratching it all day long. He was fascinated and curious and amazed and full of WTF??

It's rather reciprocated by his holidays. He has, for a couple of decades, sent me a New Zealand calendar every year with all their holidays marked on it. I swear those people have a holiday 4 times a month. If the queen farts, they stop and celebrate (all while explaining their remoteness from the monarch).

This time, they spent Canada Day in Canada and will clip the last half of the 4th here. Should be interesting to hear their take on it all.

I'm to pick up the RelayRides car at 10 and, hopefully, remember to take the things I need out of my car - mostly the garage door opener. Then on to Papa Murphy's and the grocery store and then chill til it's time to pick them up at 2.  They are sailing into a port at the north end of the waterfront which is really fairly close as the crow flies but impossible to get to otherwise. I should send a crow. There is massive construction between here and there and all the roads around the port are jammed and there is no parking and I am not looking forward to it but, it is what it is and I will deal. At least it's a holiday and there won't be work traffic/parking.

I think I'll spend the time from now til time to leave for the car, reading. I have a couple of excellent books going now but also a couple of really interesting looking ones stacked up behind them. I am really enjoying reading these days - eye reading and ear reading.

HOLY CRAP! I just sold my old Chromebook on Amazon! Wow. I listed it for $250 with plans to drop it down to $150 when I put the other one on sale. No need now. Wow. Ok, new plan. I think I'll wrap it up and take it over to the self serve post office.  Wow.

whew!

So off to the post office I went. I had a great bubble wrap for laptop thing that I had to buy years ago to ship a laptop in for fixing. I grabbed it and it was perfect. The post office had a box. Excellent. The machine guided me through postage and insurance and a tracking number $20. Fair enough.  And spit out the label and told me to put it in the package bin.

The box did not even come close to fitting in that fucking package bin.  Not even close and no where else to put it. WTF???  USPS, you were so great at everything except the fucking crucial step!!!

Defeated I came on home and did some stuff and then went to pick up the car.  That went fairly smoothly.  The car is, of course, HUGE, compared to mine. And it is extremely stressful to drive someone else's car with zero instructions.  But boy, is it ever a lovely car. Smoooooooooooth.  The aux jack doesn't work with my phone but I just googled around and think I have the answer there (need different cable which I'm sure I have a bagillion of in this house).  There is no place to really set the phone so I can see it but I'll just make Scott hold it while I drive.  No biggie.

The guy I'm renting the phone from could not be more accommodating.  After I left him, I spied a broken grill in the head console and I didn't want him to think I did it. So I snapped a pic and texted it to him and he answered immediately that he knew about it and all was good. Nice.

Then on to the grocery store for ice cream and coleslaw and then on to Papa Murphy's where pizza was procured and then I had a wild ass thought...  Doesn't Office Depot do USPS shipping?  Google says yes. Called my Office Depot and wonder of fucking wonders they were open!!!  Laptop now safely on its way.  I'm sure it will not go out until tomorrow but I'm done with my part.

This selling through Amazon thing is really amazing. It wasn't that much fun to set up but that's a one time thing. And you don't get the $$ til the end of the month, but other than that, it's the easiest thing in the world. I am shocked. After my friends leave, I'm going around the house and see if there isn't more technogoodies I can sell. I snagged the chromebook I wanted on Woot so when it gets here, I'll put the new-ish one I have now up for sale.

Successful day so far!  Now I have a couple of hours before I need to head out to meet their boat.

Fun

Turns out that having Julie and Scott arrive on July the 4th turned out to be way more good than bad.  Parking and getting around was a whole lot easier. I found a legal place right in front of the port. It took forever for them to get through customs while I tried to monitor the three different ways - one around the corner - they might exit the building (who the hell thought that was a good idea?? there was a little pack of us waiting for people wandering around all the exits).  Finally we connected.

It was fun to see them - it's been several years since they were here. We made way to their hotel and got them checked in and then came here to home. They opened their Amazon purchases and they brought me very fun Kiwi gifts. Plus, at my request, they smuggled me in some Surprise Kinder Eggs - my first!

We had delicious pizza - it really was good - and a great visit. They elected to go check out the market first thing tomorrow and then walk down here. I gave them a key and we agreed to meet here after my swim. We have lots of good, easy, fluid plans. I'm looking forward to it.
