I heard on NPR this morning, my 66th birthday, that if you live to age 65, it's likely you will live another 20 years. WTF???? I was not and did not pay attention to the rest of the story. I'm just going to pretend it isn't true. I have had a wonderful, great, magical life. In 20 years, I'll be on oxygen 24/7, in some home where snotty power hungry attendants will be dictating my every move which will be painful because I'm old. And surrounded by annoying old people. Your impression of an experience is always determined by the last 5% of that experience. So my great, wonderful, magical life will be forgotten. Thanks, but no thanks.

There's a pool to the south of here which isn't as handy as mine but is lovely. It's schedule doesn't generally mesh with mine but for some reason I thought to check it just now and they have lap swimming from 8:30-9:30 on Saturday mornings! It is far less likely to be as crowded as my normal pool. hmmmm Google says it will take me 17 minutes to get there. It's now 7:20. I think I'm going to do it!!

My Saturday swim peops will wonder Where The Hell Is She??? but they will just have to get over that.

By the way I'm loving my new phone so much. I hate that it's so big and I love that it's so big. I just googled Ranier Beach Pool on my computer and then picked up the phone to bring it up on maps and it was already there! Google, I love you. Really. I do.

So, that's the plan. I might look for breakfast on the way home. No plans for the day beyond that.

There's some noise just outside my terrace that woke me up last night. It's like a semi is parked there with the motor running and that noise is bouncing off the buildings. I finally got up in the middle of the night and closed the terrace door. It's still there this morning. I don't know what the hell it is but I do believe it is louder than city standards. We had problems with noise coming from the new apartment building across the street before. The city was called in and the problem was fixed. We can do that again, I'm sure. Or maybe the noise will go away. If it is a large semi cooling it's jets, it's invisible. But, loud.

So the new swimming hole is now my Regular Saturday Swim. It's a bitch to get to. Maximum number of traffic lights (even taking the interstate highway route) and all of them red. But, once there... It's a beautiful pool which massively wide lanes. And the locker room is lovely and the shower pressure is just below holy-fuck-I-need-a-rope-to-hold-on-to. But the swim was the best part. I was totally by myself - whole pool to myself - for the first 15 minutes. Then I shared the lane with a couple of women for the rest of the time. When I got out, one of them asked me about my Shuffle and then said 'You are really the best to share a lane with. I love your steady, calming pace.' I do like the 8:30 start much better than 9.

The only downside is that there are precious few acceptable breakfast places between the pool and my house. I tried a route today that had two but one has too many kids and the other wasn't open yet and neither had parking (I was going to do my 20 minutes of walking but when it wasn't even open...). So I drove nearly all the way home and at the last minute decided to go to Denny's.

While I was slowly driving home, I happened to flip on the radio. One NPR station is still doing pledge drive so I went for the other one and happened on a really well done, interesting program that I had never heard of before. I missed the first minute but after listening to it for a few, I realized it was local! Sound Effect on KPLU Looks like it's first episode was just last January and they all look interesting. I'm going to have some fun listening. And just when I was ready to dump the whole station!! I've got the podcaster on my phone downloading all of the episodes right now.

Denny's was packed to the gills and the wait for my food was way too long but my new phone kept me happily occupied. The food was good and now I'm hope and the house doesn't smell like bacon. (The smell afterwards is always the downside of making my own breakfast.)

AND!! The horrible noise is gone! I checked before I left and it was louder than ever. I checked from the street and nothing. Weird. As soon as i got hope I opened up the terrace door and ... all was quiet. Whew.

Now, I have an hour until the Mariner game starts on TV. Zoey is wandering around not being a PIA. The mail is in downstairs. I think I'll walk down the stairs, get the mail and try walking up the stairs. At least a couple of flights.

Today, when I left Denny's, I turned off the phone and dropped it into my purse. When I got into the car, I turned on the radio and hit the AUX button and said "Ok. Google, Play some music." Beep Beep 'Playing Music' came out of my purse and through the radio speakers and following it was Johnny Rivers "Poor Side of Town".

I had a phone before that would do (listen and respond when it was turned off) but it took several tries and didn't always work. This new phone works every single time and it just tickles me.

Last night I finally found the exact combo of software and settings so that I can prop my phone up on the wireless charger at night and hit a button and a nice, big numbered clock stays on all night must like I want.

---

The bigness of this phone makes it hard to decide among all the entertainment options. Shall I read my book? (It's a great size for that, but the current case is too slippery to prop up.) Shall I play a game which is too big for my old phone but perfect for this one. Shall I catch up on my favorite RSS feeds? Or LJ or anything really that goes in a browser because this phone is big enough to make that practical. I'm totally hooked.

---

But, still my two favorite techno things that give me a jolt of delight every time are depositing a check and controlling the window shade with my phone.

---

I had this thought this morning about how miraculous all of this is. Even 5 years ago, I would have bet NFW on most if not all of it. When I was born in 1949, TVs were the technological miracle of the day. Now I carry one in my pocket all day every day.

And, if someone should stumble on this entry in 20 years or so they will likely read it and chuckle at how quaint and old-timey I am for thinking this stuff is cool.
