Almost Fall?
Jun. 30th, 2015 07:45 amBefore LA Fitness opened in West Seattle, I did most all my swimming at city pools. I bought a $45 pass (senior rate) every month for all the swimming I could eat. But, now, I really only swim in city pools 3 days a week. I can buy 10 swims for $33.50. My regular city pool will be closed the last two weeks in August for maintenance. My current monthly pass expires this Sunday. Sooooooo... I was trying to figure out the smartest way to buy city swims next time. Turns out buying two 10s will get me to Labor Day... squirrel!!
Could we be that close to the end of this hot weather??? Since it's actually not July yet, it seems like the hot will last forever. Now I think rather than get bummed about it, I'll just focus on it by swimming days. There are only 20 city pool swims until cool weather. (Yeah, I do understand the flaw but I'm desperate here.)
I'm very delighted to have a way to clearly hear the TV. Last night I gave it the ultimate test it - a new (to me) British drama. It's always difficult for me to dig through the accents and unfamiliar idioms to follow the story. Being able to clearly hear the words made it a piece o' cake. (Scott&Bailey which was really good, by the way.)
This is kind of like the sewing table. A completely unexpected happening leads me to find a fabulous solution to a problem I had not even considered solutionable. (hahahha - your can retire the girl from the corporation but you can't carve corporate speak out of the girl!) I am now delighted that my neighbor complained about my TV noise!!
Now that the concept has been proven, I need to hone in on the best execution.
I think that Walgreens mail order has my new drugs all sorted. I take 3 prescription pills every day and use two inhalers. It's much more handy to get 3 months worth at a time in the mail, then trot into the pharmacy every month. Walgreens is great about sending once you get it all set up but setting it up is a major PIA. It's not all Walgreens fault. Between governmental rules and regulations and insurance rules and regulations, it's kind of a miracle, I ever get any drug at all! I can follow online but they have to get my voice approval over the phone every time in a phone call for every drug. Their website is kind of wonky. The two inhalers retail for $800 and $900 each. And, until they ship, that's the price their website says I have to pay. But, once they ship, the charge to me is $3.60. A bit of a diff.
Both inhalers got replaced this time which is a double dose of crazy. One has already been shipped and the other is showing on their website but can't be shipped for another 10 days (insurance rule). So it's still showing $700 but when they called the service rep assured me the price would be $3.60. I think it's clear sailing. Whew.
Swimming this morning. There may be a haircut after.

Refresh, refresh, refresh
Jun. 30th, 2015 12:32 pmI'm wearing out the refresh key on my browser in hopes that I can get UPS to change from On Vehicle for Delivery Today to Delivered. Yesterday they delivered about noon. It's currently noon:30. Refresh, Refresh, Refresh...
I remembered that I bought some crackers at Trader Joes that were just not delicious so I took them with the rock hard bagels in a bag up to the customer service counter and said "I do not have any receipt and don't even have the box that the crackers came in so I'm not expecting a receipt but here's my feedback..." The nice lady listened and asked me if I'd like my money back and I said sure and she gave me $6.50. Nice. Very nice.
I did not get a haircut. I decided that I could put it off a while longer if I combed my hair a little differently. Do not call me The Donald.
I sliced into my finger the other day with my hack saw. Not badly but swimming isn't helping it heal and it's just in a place that makes it very annoying.

Mrs. Kravitz* again... at your service
Jun. 30th, 2015 04:45 pmSo. There is a couple who live down the hall. Let's call them Jim and Jane. They have lived here at least a couple of decades. They are Boeing lifers. They have no children. They have birds. He has hair that would hang down past his ass if he ever undid the braid. She has hair that hangs just past her ears. They each have a white VW Beetle.
About a decade ago, they got email and we had a good reason to exchange email addresses but then she started sending me those stupid jokes, chain emails and crap like that. I spent a long time crafting a request as sweet and nice as I possible could asking to FORTHELOVEOFGOD...STOP! She took great offense and spent many years not even saying 'hi' in the elevator.
I worked on both of them slowly but surely. And now they even showed me their new Withings watches a few months ago. One morning last year, he and I met at the elevator when I was on my way to the pool at 6:15am and I asked if Jane was ok. He allowed as how Jane had retired after 30 years because 'her retirement pay was better than her work pay.' Gotta love Boeing.
Anywhoooo. For the past maybe 6 months, nearly every single Monday, Wednesday and Friday I either run into them at the elevator or see them walking down the street at 6:15 am on their way to Starbucks. They take their own cups, of course. Every single morning. He then goes off to work and she retires, I guess.
I have wondered more than once - especially when it's pitch black out and freezing fucking cold, why they don't just buy a coffee maker... Seems like it would be oh so much more comfortable and easier not to mention cheaper.
WELL... when we get packages the delivery services put them all into out package closet in the garage for us to pick up when we like. Today when I went to pick mine up, I saw there was a large one for Jane and Jim... from Keurig... announcing on the outside that it was their monthly shipment of Vue Pods.
So they do have a coffee maker and just like to go buy Starbucks. Wild.

Plan B looks like the plan for TV sound. I'm holding off declaring total victory until tomorrow to ensure that after a 'sleep' it comes up automatically when I connect.
But, the TV Ears are now down in the UPS Out box on their way back to Amazon along with the analog to digital converter that I would have had to insert in order to use them on things other than TiVo connected to my TV.
I thing the better solution is:
A bluetooth transmitter plugged into the audio out jack on the TV paired with a very comfortable bluetooth headphone. I can hear TV, TiVo, FireTV, Roku and Chromecast. Nicely. Comfortably. I can use both earbuds if I want to block out everything and one if I want to catch some ambient noise for any reason.
If the setup does not work tomorrow morning, I think I'll look at variations of the transmitter but I also think it will work.

Clean up....
Jun. 30th, 2015 08:14 pmI like the look of my TV set up without that giant ugly sound bar so much that I kept going. Tonight I decommissioned the DVD player. Finding the remote was non-trivial. But, I did find it. Down to the Free Shelf tomorrow. The bedroom TV has a DVD player built into it and there's always the Windows computer if I come up on a critical DVD playing need.
Now the TV area looks so much tidier and nice.
The line of sight problem with TV Ears is nowhere to be found with the bluetooth setup. I can hear the ball game clearly all over the house - almost to the front door. I had some interference problems but I found an aux extension cable in my Hardware Stash® and moved it from behind the TV to the front. Fixed the problem perfectly.

One disconcerting issue with the set up is that I can now hear the background sound in TV shows that I'm not at all used to hearing. Watching a cop show this evening and while two cops were talking in the breakroom, I could clearly hear the newscast on the TV behind them. I've never heard that kind of detail before. Weird. A couple of times I have hit pause to see if the noise was part of the show or something going haywire in my living room. Part of the program each time.
It's like when I got my cataracts removed and spent the first couple of weeks totally distracted by the clarity of detail that I had never seen before in the smallest, silliest things.
