This morning I finally figured out one of the two big financial pickles. I now have a great and easy plan. The other financial pickle = what if the house doesn't sell quickly enough. I'm hoping to get some insight into that tomorrow.

And then it will be waiting. Waiting for someone to die or move to assisted care. You know that the marketing folks at Timber Ridge have a spreadsheet... Ethel wasn't looking too perky last week, Jim's blood pressure has been really high recently, that 3rd heart attack is coming after Debbie any minute... with percentages - gone before December - 75%. I mean they have to, right?

If Ethel is in my preferred apartment and kicks today, her family has a month to empty out her apartment. I don't know if I get to look and make my selection before then but say no. That means mid-October. Say, it's perfect and I say yes, then it will be, they say, 90 days +/- before I can move in. Part of that will be busy with furniture buying and decorating but still, that takes me to mid-January. And then what if it snows that day and I have to wait some more????

This is the loop that my brain is in now. I want to ping Ethel and see how she's feeling.

But now I want to get this house sorted. I want all the stuff I'm going to take with me moved into the bedroom closets or on a list or marked with tape. And then everything else can be bunched together for removal - now or later.

Once all that is done, I'll be in a better mind frame to wait for Ethel to do her part.

At least I have a plan and I'm marching that plan.

Meanwhile, Julio has forgiven me. He hopped up this morning for breakfast and got very near my hands without worrying about it. Whew. I told him he does not have to wear a collar if he doesn't want to. Ever. That may be a lie but works for now.

although it's not the same

when I wanted to move into this place (subsidized housing) I was on the waiting list for 2 years. I called every month to find out how things were moving - same here, someone either had to die or be in such bad shape they had to go to a home. About the middle of March that year, the phone rang and it was the director and front office person. She didn't say hello, she said "I feel like a ghoul. Louise died this morning, are you interested in her apartment..."

The way our place works is that you can make a token (refundable) deposit to sign up for the "priority list"; when you decide you're actually ready, your seniority on the priority list is used to determine your position on the "standby list", which is people who are ready to move once an apartment is available. We stayed on the priority list for about three years before we decided we were ready to go; we expected to be on the priority list for the better part of a year, but it ended up only being a couple of months. (Actually, I think we were offered an apartment about a month in, but we rejected it because we didn't like the view; the one we're in now came up about a month later.) It was another 4 months or so before the place was ready to move into.

I keep imagining that when I am in need of a senior transitional care place to live, there will be loads of real estate since I'm at the tail end of the baby boom. I also imagine prices will be lower because of the excess inventory. A girl can dream.

I like the way you think!

I have a similar theory - that by the time I need those kinds of assistive services, the baby boomers will have provided a robust market for all kinds of companies who come up with cool and useful products and services. And by the time I need them, the demand will be lower and there will be lots of supply!
