very happy ending
Mar. 24th, 2024 11:29 amI left too early so stopped at Trader Joe's. They had daffodil buds again so I got one bunch for me and one for Myrna. I got a few other things and then discovered they have unpasteurized orange juice!! This is basically fresh squeeze so perfect. And what a great discovery. Also their cold brew ice tea concentrate season is back. It was a win win win. And my first victory of the day.
Then on to H&R Block where I killed time in the parking lot. After all of my 'I don't need to go to no stinkin' Mariner game' bravado, it dawned on me that maybe I could work a deal with Bret to park in my old space for a game. So I sent him a note and he said 'sure!!' so I sent my friend a note and said 'flip flopper here... we're on!'.
Then into the office. The receptionist was delightful and Gurmita came out to meet me immediately even though I was early. It was a wonderful welcome and it got better. Gurmita did no senior splaining. She was sharp and efficient and prepared and gave me good info. I signed my name a million times and then we talked about next year. I told her that I wanted to pay at least something in estimated taxes 'like the $5K I paid last year even if we think I might not need to.'
Shocked look on her face. You paid $5,000 last year?? I don't think I have that in the return. Cut to 20 minutes later and we have discovered that, in fact, I did not tell her about it! It was in my notes but got dropped from the notes I sent her!! Special points for her remembering that. She added it in and my $1,300 refund jumped to $6,300. SWEET!
We talked about selling the condo and, if I get $600,000 for it, I will have $180,000 in capital gains tax to pay BUT she says that goes down with closing costs and any improvements - carpet, painting, a/c, special assessments, etc. Over 30 years of improvements. That $180k is going to evaporate fast. I thought next year was going to be a new kind of horrible mess but, apparently not. She put a note in her calendar for the end of April to look into it all and let me know.
I'm very grateful to have found her. Very.
I sent a copy of her business card to our accounting director when I got home - if you run into anyone needing a tax preparer who understands form 8275!
And now I'm home. I've had lunch. The cats have had lunch. The Mariner game starts in a bit. All is good. Really good.
