computer shenanigans
Apr. 12th, 2024 03:32 pmI've been using my Pixel books exclusively since moving in here. They are tiny and look nice but they are old and dying. I have 2. One lives on the table by the window and one lives on the C table at my sofa. They mirror each other. I can leave them plugged in and just hop from one to another as needed. (Chrome just added this new 'save tab group' feature so I can even have all my tabs in both places.
On my current When My Ship Comes In list is to replace them both. But I haven't researched a good replacement and am not nearly ready. But today I came really close. I found one and researched prices and Best Buy had the best price but next to the price was 'trade in your old device'. This led me to my old windows laptop.
It was a jewel in its day - Lenovo Thinkpad. Great keyboard, nice track pad and even the little red IBM track button. The display is kind of blah but I always used external monitors with it. However it is now too old to update Windows. And I haven't even had it turned on in 6 months. And, of course, not nearly good enough for trade in.
BUT!! I remembered reading last year about 'turn your old computer into a chromebook'. So I googled that and an hour later, I have a new chromebook!!! It was very easy to do. The hardest part was finding a thumb drive that I didn't care if everything got erased. But, I found one and now I am typing on my new chromebook.
It's not a forever one. But it's certainly a Til My Ship Comes In one and it works MUCH better than either of the old pixelbooks.
I'm fairly pleased with myself.

Date: 2024-04-13 05:10 am (UTC)I love old Thinkpads. The X230 is my current favorite -- I have two, both running Linux Mint.
