This could get ugly

I'm sitting here just after 4 pm and my very annoying next door neighbor, Ingrid, knocks on the door. "I just opened my mail and then saw it was really for you!"

Yes, she had my IRS letter!!! The one I've been looking for now for a week and a half. And spent 2 hours this morning on the phone about. 'I only pick up my mail once a week because it's trash.' Trash and MY LETTER!

So now I read the letter and turns out the IRS dude I spoke to today did not exactly spill truth.

The letter says my return was NOT selected randomly. It was selected for one of four reasons - tax credits being the one I'm sure is mine. AND it was not selected for review, it was selected to verify information.

And the 120 days is, according to this letter, a load o' crap.

You don't need to do anything at this time. Allow up to 60 days to complete this review... When we are finished, we may send you your refund, ask for more information, or deny all or part of your refund and offer you appeal rights.

60 days is May 23.

Soooooooo this could still get very ugly. But, there's nothing I can do about it now. At least I have the info in writing.

Thank goodness you got the letter and what an in-accurate phone call you had. That Ingrid, jeez!

120 days vs. 60 days: managing taxpayer expectations. If he told you 120 days and it took 45, perception of their efficiency would be very good. This guy is a lifer who knows how to make himself (writing notes while on a call) and the IRS look efficient. LOL

What a mess this has been for you. Here's to things righting themselves without any more angst for you.

You might want to start thinking about looping in your tax preparer (H.R. Block???) so they can have their ducks in a row for this.

I actually did think of that. My plan is to take the letter by their office this afternoon and get them to make a copy for my file. Can't hurt and it's easy enough to do.
