volunteering
Apr. 24th, 2024 12:00 pmI was raised by two super volunteers. My mother and father had their hand in anything and everything always. The volunteered together and individually on a fairly massive scale. It was impressive and intimidating.
They raised one very crappy volunteer. I rarely even offer. I'm lazy and also not a people lover. I remember once, when I first retired, I sent an email to the Books for the Blind offering to read, file, sweep up, do whatever they needed. I got a pretty curt reply. "No thank you." That's kind of been my volunteer profile.
A few years ago, I signed up with the Loose Ends Project. They take in requests from people to finish knitting, crochet, embroidery, sewing projects that their now dead parents (mostly Mothers) started and didn't get finished. They match those requests with volunteers to get the projects to completion. I signed up, I never heard a peep.
Until today. A woman in Issaquah has a baby blanket that her mother started but did not finish before she died. It's a cute pattern, easy to figure out and easy to do. I'm delighted to finish it. The process starts with my sending her an email telling her I'd be delighted to do it, either drop off the start and yarn here or let's meet somewhere. I just did that. I hope it happens. I'm looking forward to it.
But, than I also volunteered today for a task I am NOT looking forward to. Guilt volunteer. Tomorrow they (the city, the county and Timber Ridge and I don't know who all else) are doing a fire drill. It's kind of a semi disaster drill (semi disasters, semi drill). They've been talking about it for a month. Apparently the plans were semi developed and finished on the fly. They told us in a meeting. Then they sent someone to elbow coffee to retell, we've gotten a million.8 email reminders. And phone calls and visits to our doors. I am so so so over this. It's tomorrow afternoon. We don't leave the premises, just gather, get counted, move to another place and get counted... I'm thinking goat rodeo.
This morning we got an email saying they still needed volunteers to be pretend assisted living people. They are doing a special semi drill for the infirmed tomorrow morning. But, they don't want to use the real people. So I signed up. As long as my half my day is shot, I might as well give it all up. They are going to take us in a bus to the senior center in town and then bring us back. I'm thinking goat rodeo - off campus edition.
The morning is 9:30 to 11 and the afternoon version starts at 1. The Mariner game is kind of in between but I can catch what I miss on my phone.
It hardly counts as volunteering but it's the best I got.
