The end of an era
Nov. 17th, 2002 08:42 pmI discovered tonight that when I changed servers last week, I lost 2 months of pictures. It's kind of a relief actually.
I started out in 1997 taking pictures of the Kingdome. I had seen the movie Smoke where Harvey Keitel played this shopkeeper who, every day, walked out the door of his shop in Brooklyn and snapped a photo. For some reason that just grabbed me. In 1997 I started taking a picture every Sunday at 9 a.m. This was before my first digital camera. I have a regular old photo album of the first couple of years. Then in 1999 I got a digital camera and started the web pages.
In 2000 I started taking a picture every single day instead of once a week. That was when they started tearing down the Kingdome, getting it ready for implosion. And my website started to get famous. In February of that year I was interviewed by everyone it seemed. I (and my website) even made Sports Illustrated. I got quite a little following. From January of 2000 until July of 2002, I averaged about 500 visitors a day.
Then they finished the stadium and then winter makes it hard to ensure there is a photo every day. I knew I was probably going to stop doing it some day, I just didn't know when. I kind of thought I'd get a new project before I stopped this one but when I discovered that I'd lost two months, I knew it was a sign.
I actually do kind of have a new project in mind - a daily chronicle of my knitting... but I think I'll wait until I get back from Mom's to finish that thought and see what I come up with.

There is still so much of me that has the mind and maturity of a 6 year old.
