In my brain, there should be outrage at the way Timber Ridge mishandled the whole 'emergency' last night. I've only lived here 9 months and have been through several emergency preparedness sessions and one drill and NOTHING not one single thing covered in those sessions/drills matched what happened last night. Still no word from Timber Ridge about any of it. I think that's just frightening.

But, my brain is an island.

Everyone else wants details about whodunit. And viewing of the damage.

Bonny did have a cogent question... One guy burned his soup and set off this chain of events. Is he responsible financially for the damage? There's some question about the sprinkler system that apparently went amok or did it? So so so many questions. No answers. And apparently strobe lights that did not get turned off kept many awake last night.

But, like I said, I heard no one complain about the food all day and that's a first. Just sayin'

There was a similar situation at a senior living facility near me a few years ago - a resident set the microwave for 30 minutes instead of 30 seconds and that filled the entire building with smoke and smoke detectors going off everywhere. The resident was given two choices - move to assisted living or have your range and microwave disconnected.

It does seem like overkill for multiple units to be soaked by sprinklers for a small fire in one unit's kitchen - seems to me like that would be a malfunction.

Your theory of it being set by someone to distract from the food, has legs!

I would be particularly concerned if I was a person in a walker or a wheelchair and on a higher floor. Like, if that fire had spread, and we needed to evacuate, my option is 'take the stairs'? It feels like that Eddie Izzard bit "Cake or death?" "Um, cake please" "Well we're all out of cake!" "so my choice is 'or death'?"

I was wondering about the financial aspect of it too. Maybe it's covered under insurance? It does seem like a malfunction for the sprinkler system to have gone off in multiple units.

A couple of times we've set off our own smoke detectors when grilling, which caused a visit from Security, but nobody else was affected. I'm not sure what it would take to set off the sprinklers.

We have had alarms go off a few times – it's just loud noise, no words – without ever knowing what caused them. There was that one time when it went off at 2:00 AM and lasted for 45 minutes, which we eventually learned was the result of a sprinkler-system pipe freezing and flooding one or two apartments, but in none of these cases did we ever hear anything "official". Supposedly when the alarm goes off we're supposed to stay in our apartments until/unless someone comes to tell us otherwise, but we didn't know that at the time of the middle-of-the-night alarm, and went wandering around to try to find out what was going on (as did several other people).

Last year around this time there was a major failure involving the hot-water system in a different building, which resulted in flood damage to a lot of apartments. I don't know what info the people involved got at the time, but there were many updates in the Management Newsletter in the following months about the source of the problem and the progress being made in dealing with the aftermath.
