The letter from Heather, in my cubbie, turned out to be yet another example of her good communications (why can't she teach the others????). She explained that a flammable object was left on the burner and the stove was turned on by accident. The sprinklers then caused significant damage to a number of apartments.

She went on to say that they were using the guests rooms and had secured a block of hotel rooms for those who had planned to use the guest rooms. Sounds like 2 to 3 weeks to fix it all. Department heads visited every resident affected to on Saturday night (she was out of town at a conference).

It was a good letter and a good way to respond. I would have liked an online version but I needed the steps.

[edit later - by 1:30 pm today, I had a copy of the letter in my inbox so she gets 5 out of 5 stars]

My own stove top is home to several flammable items as is the oven which I use for storage. I cook on an induction burner (which sits on the stove top) and I use a toaster oven. The only time I need or have used the big oven is for a Papa Murphy's pizza which I think I've had 3 times in 9 months.

But chances of my repeating what happened are not small. Plus, my stove has front buttons that I'm always bumping up against and it beeps at me which is annoying.

Soooooo this morning, I went to the breaker box. Yep, range is on its switch and that switch is not OFF!!! Problem solved.

Should I ever desperately need a Papa Murphy's pizza, I'll just flip it back on. Easy peasy.

That sounds like a well written letter explaining what happened - but they definitely need to address the execution of emergency evacuations - because that sounds like it was a clusterfuck!

The breaker switch is a great solution! We don't use our cooktop as much as the slow cooker, so we keep the cooktop covered with a huge custom made pad, which is flammable. The cooktop had a child-proof mode, which is supposed to be engaged when a person finishes cooking, because a 5 pound weight can turn the cooktop on. Guess how I found out... thankfully the bag of potatoes did not also turn on a burner.

Yes, my friend and her family have flipped the breaker on her Mom's stove so that kind of thing can't happen. Great solution.

Glad everyone is (physically) okay.

I was going to suggest the breaker, but you already figured that out.

Smart idea, turning off that range switch.
