Birth and Death
Sep. 1st, 2024 08:57 amWhen I first moved into my condo, an easy mile down the street was a lovely little Sears store next to an Office Max with lots of parking. I spent a lot of time and money in both places. Especially Sears. And then, of course, Sears closed. And then Office Max. And the grand plans Starbucks had for making the building across the street from my condo into their showcase headquarters dried up when they hit on hard times.
So Starbucks moved into Office Max. And then one day, there was action in the Sears space. Soon it was clear that the action was Amazon. And then Amazon announced grocery delivery and grocery pickup and our end of town was coming from Sears. You could order a pint of Ben and Jerry's and drive up and they would bring it out to your car. More than once, I drove up, ordered and just waited there in the shade. It was wonderful.
Then they added package pickup and return to that same spot and I was there at least twice a week. It was so easy and so quick and they had free samples of shit. And the people were so nice. That went on for many years.
Yesterday I read that Amazon has closed it all down now. No food deliveries or pickup. No package pickup and return. They send you to Whole Foods which is 11 miles away with difficult, annoying parking.
Here in Issaquah, I can just pop over to UPS which is close and easy with good parking. I moved in time.
Today Leah, Biggie's former shrink and now my friend, is coming to have brunch and watch the Mariner game with me. The last Sunday of Mariners watching for me. My subscription expires on Thursday. Another end of an era.
Julio broke his favorite toy and now I have to find the teensy screw driver and see if I can get in to fix it.
Myrna asked for a special doll so I made it for her yesterday. There is only one doll left on the shelf but there is half of another on the needles so he'll get a friend tonight.
