If it looks like rain and you remember your umbrella, it will not rain. FACT. If after weeks and weeks of Tuesday night fights resulting in cat hair tufts all over the carpet the day after the house cleaner comes, you buy a stick vacuum, there will be no fight or tufts on the carpet. FACT.

I hated school and don't remember my teachers except I had a guy in 7th grade who was really into sentence diagramming and its practical uses. I'm sure he's dead as a door nail now which is great because I'd hate for him to see the second sentence in that first paragraph. I do remain grateful, however, for his infusing me with sentence structure value and the tools.

I was sorely tempted to skip the pool this morning but I didn't and I was rewarded. Yesterday, I juiced up my playlist and it now has some very high tempo stuff in there that really does act like jet fuel but still I was ready to bail early. And then Wally showed. Wally is on of my volleyball players. On non volleyball days, he generally walks the treadmill but today he was in the pool. "I've been watching you do laps on non volleyball days. I used to swim all the time so I just thought I'd do some today!" He does 4 laps swimming and 2 walking. Which is an excellent ratio but I hate the walking part. However, after another lap, one of those high tempo songs came on and that made the walking/jogging way better. So, all in all, an excellent swim day!

Myrna is 92. Her mother lived longer but she's pretty sanguine about her own end. Neither of her children will discuss it. "Eric hates hearing anything that starts with 'when I die'." So she uses me. Yesterday she got a very lovely and informative email from a lady at the crematory. We discussed the info and picked out what she wants and how she should talk about it with the lady and she's all excited to get that settled and paid for exactly like she wants.

No big plans for today. Just a normal, regular, lovely day ahead.

Oh I did finish my door wreath. It turned out to a 'shoot the artist before he ruins the painting' situation. I was initially thinking about way more balls of yarn and I should make the knitted piece longer and also that the cover should have been a solid color and then I shot the artist and hung it on the door.

Haha, this morning while I was brushing my teeth I heard something out my window that sounded like a street sweeper was coming. It turned out to be rain. It was dumping buckets out there. I made a mental note to bring my umbrella today, and of course I didn't need to use it at all. Just one extra thing to carry.

In baking school we used to say, "Friends don't let friends over palette their cakes." It always happens where your cake looks almost perfect, but then you think you can take your palette knife out to smooth out one last spot on the icing, and the whole thing goes to shit.

If it looks like rain and you remember your umbrella, it will not rain.

We always use this rule. It usually works.

It turned out to a 'shoot the artist before he ruins the painting' situation.

This reminds me of certain books that cannot be finished/published while the author is alive, because they insist on tinkering with it. A notable case (which I suspect is of no interest to you) is J.R.R. Tolkien's The Silmarillion, which he was still revising when he died (his son put together what he left behind to produce a more-or-less coherent story). I'm beginning to suspect that Robert Caro is never going to complete the 5th and final volume of his comprehensive (and quite fascinating) biography of LBJ (he turns 89 next month, and it's been literally decades since the 4th volume came out), and I hope that he will leave it in sufficiently near-completion state that somebody else (like his wife) can get it published while I'm still alive.
