Different strokes
Oct. 29th, 2024 08:50 amI had dinner last night with Ruth, who was very interesting and comfortable to be around. But the differences between us were just as interesting. She was married to a Navy guy and ended up in England outside of London for 11 years after his Navy. They ran a business dealing in networking hardware and some software. Then he got sick and they moved to North Carolina (where their daughter was in medical school) and she lived there after he died for 20+ years and then she moved to Bellevue (their son lives here). And then to Timber Ridge last month.
So she had a lot of fun and interesting conversation. She does not eat red meat and things there is too much beef on the Timber Ridge menu while I look at the week's selections and say Where's the beef?! We had the same entree last night (a very good shrimp and cheese ravioli) but she had double broccoli and I had none. She booked a trip - a cruise leaving out of the Azores that featured a specific big shot speaker. 1. NFW would I ever go on a cruise 2. I have heard of the Azores but have no clue where they are. (Turns out they are in the middle of nowhere and it's nearly impossible to get there from here anyway.) and 3. I never heard of her big shot speaker. Also big shot speaker canceled and now she can't cancel the cruise. So weird to me but normal for her, apparently.
Oh and she's very interested in playing volleyball but it's a nogo since she is a night person and thinks 8 am is way too early to get up.
It was still a fun evening.
This morning I have a phone date with the Medicare insurance guy. It's the start of the process.
I found out that the free Timber Ridge TV service comes with 20 hours of DVR time but you have to use Comcast hardware to record. (You can use TiVo hardware but you still have to rent a card from Comcast.) I bought their lowest level DVR off eBay for $30. On the downside, there is no way it will work. It thinks it's in Spokane (where the seller was) and won't change it's mind without intervention from Comcast who won't intervene because they want you to pay them $10 a month to rent the same box. It did come with a fancy (nicer) remote that Amazon sells for $30 so kind of a wash. But sad trombone on the recording sitch.
Today is house cleaner day. I sure hope she shows because last week's no show is beginning to show, if you get my drift.
Oh a new Peter Grainger come out in Audible today. I need to clean up my Grainger lists and see where I am in all his series. I still have a marvelous wealth of his stuff to read. I am currently reading Liz Moore's The God of the Woods which is very very good but it is due in 4 days so I need to be done.
Time now to get dressed! I don't think my insurance call is video but still it feels like a weird thing to do naked.
Shelf.
