Several years ago, I worked at a company who's main product is automated telephone calls. While they weren't exactly as sleezy as telemarketers, still, it was close enough for me. When I got laid off, the first thing I did was take a long hot shower. The company is going strong without me. There is clearly a giant profit out there in torturing us with our own telephones. This morning I have gotten 4 automated telephone calls - three from candidates and one from some group who wanted me to vote for an initiative.

That I voted a week ago is not that relevant. That my telephone needs a spam filter sure is. Geesh! Between the TV ads and the stupid news stories about the TV ads and the automated calls, I'm wondering about the viability of public elections. I'm nearly ready to give up my right to vote cause I don't really have a choice - it's asshole A or asshole B or Confusing Initiative A or Confusing Initiative B.

My cynicism is getting such a life of it's own, I should get it a social security number.

I have to leave in a minute to go into a meeting with my boss in his office which is over in Freemont. Not so far from here and really relatively easy to get to and it's really only basic inertia that makes it a bother.

All else is kind of under control here. As best I can tell.

A spam filter for the phone. Brilliant.

Actually, my Dad has something similar plugged into his phone. He got a doohickey from Radio Shack (his all time #1 favorite store) and it detects the phone pulse emitted from those mass marketing auto dialers and automatically hangs up. He loves it.

I was going to update my journal on this very topic. I've gotten three robocalls today (two initiatives, one candidate) ... AND a Democratic party worker buzzing all the apartments in my building to hand out flyers (not like my mailbox hasn't been filled every day with them) and reminding people to vote.

I want these people to leave.me.alone.

I voted and mailed my ballot in last week.
