Thank you for Not Smoking
Nov. 5th, 2006 05:59 pmYou guys were right. It was better than I expected. I had tried to read the book when it first came out and abandoned the effort after the first 50 pages. But, the movie was good.
It was fun to see where
legalmoose does his legalling!
I grew up in Winston-Salem, NC where smoking was a required civic duty. I considered cigarette smoking one of my best skill groups until a very few years ago. The movie was superficial but I couldn't help but look a little under the surface.
They talked about a men's club in Winston-Salem 'where men could escape from their wives and families' and they showed it - all luxury and dark woodgrain and leather and smoky.
I know that place EXACTLY! It was called the Twin City Club. My father was a member. It was strictly men only. It had a great dining room - lunch and dinner and I think breakfast - no sleeping room or workout rooms or anything just a bar, smoking rooms and dining rooms. Women were allowed in only on Wednesdays for lunch and on very special occasions. Daddy threw Mom a surprise 40th birthday party there. He told Mom that for part of her birthday surprise, he was going to smuggle her up to see one of the Men-only rooms before we went out to dinner. I can't believe she fell for that but it was a great party and while everyone was getting smashed, I made sure I explored the whole place - opened every door and went into every room. Even the men's bathroom.
