There is no way in hell there will ever be another military draft in this country - at least not in the next few lifetimes. 

This is because our government will never draft women into military service.  

I'm not saying it's right.  It's not.  But it's true.  Democrats/Republicans - doesn't matter.  They don't have the balls to do it.

That's not mean, that's equality. Even the most feminist of men can't see their way clear to draft women. Until they can, we're fucked - equality-wise-speaking, I mean.

When I lived in Switzerland, they had just made the final vote in the last remaining canton that gave women equal voting rights throughout all levels of government. This was on the grounds of gender equality.

So I would ask people how long it would be before women would have to do military service. After all, every Swiss man has to do this throughout his life.

Everyone thought I was mad to ask the question. Women in the military? Why would you even think of such a perverse thing?

The number of countries where gays are allowed to serve in the military is quite numerous, including not just places like the Netherlands, but also Israel, Australia, and amazingly enough Columbia and (soon) Argentina.

In my day, you could use the student deferment (for a while) as a draft dodge but man oh man you'd have guys banging on the door to join The Gays! Think of all the toaster ovens!!!

you're right - they won't draft women. Which will make for an interesting lawsuit of discrimination should they ever try and pass a male-only version.

I mean, I understand in principle the point that Rengel is trying to make with his bill. But even he must know that it ain't gonna happen.

He does. He wants the Republicans to have to figure out how to oppose it while insisting that more troops are needed.

Now it turns out that the Democratic leadership would rather he not do this, at least not right now.
