There are 12 and 14 hour days and then...
Nov. 29th, 2006 10:20 amThe nature of the job I have now is that sometimes I wake up with nothing to do.
I've had this job now for a little over a year and there have been about 3 dead spots including one serious one (August was a killer). But there have been far more crunch times when I've worked 10-12 hour days - several in a row with weekends included. At least that's my perception.
The numbers are kind of different. I had 1872.5 billable hours from Oct 1, 2005 through Oct 31, 2006 and that comes out to a teensy bit more than 35 hours a week. Interesting...
When I took this job, my boss said he could not guarantee 40 hours a week so I negotiated a rate that would enable me to make enough money to live (well) on if I only got 30 hours a week worth of work so I am ahead of the game money wise.
Time wise it's a different story. What to do with a day when you have nothing to do.
Day 1 is easy and fun. Day 2 is pretty easy and still fun. Day 3 it's getting tricky. Day 4, ok so now we've picked all the low hanging fruit. Day 5 you start on chores and things you have been putting off. And on day 6, you start off by making an LJ entry about it!!
I could leave and go shopping or to a movie or just around and about but work could come in and I don't really want to not be here for it and, besides (and mostly), I'm not itching to go anywhere or do anything. I have TiVo to watch but, honestly, a full day of that is too much even for me. I can read or go take a short walk or dust the shelves or play more Bounce Out and I probably will do all of those...
Having free time is really a luxury and it feels like that even on day 6 but if this job has taught me one thing it is that I am no where near ready for no job at all.
AND... I just got the perfect email from my favorite project manager. 'I'm going to be heads down for the next few hours but if you are looking for something to do, feel free to pick out whatever SQL bugs are in my queue.' This is exactly why she is my favorite.
Off to work now!

Date: 2006-11-29 07:06 pm (UTC)Am I terrible for having the mental image of you lousing your boss? I need to get my pun-gene under control, clearly.
P.S. I like the cows on your blog.
