What a weird day so far.
First of all my right eye feels like I've got dust or something in my contact lens. I don't wear a lens in that eye.
And then there is my continuing tech saga... Kind of an offshoot really.
I've been pretty unhappy with my ISP. At the first of December I asked them to forward my email to a gmail account. Let's forget for a moment that they should provide me a way to access my account enough to do this myself. Jesus set it up for me. Then I decided I wanted it forwarded it to a different account. 7 days ago I called and was told someone would call me back. That same day, I also sent the request in email. No one every called me back and last night I got an email saying that my email was not being forwarded now and I would want to download it all before they did anything. WTF???
The end. I've had it with these people. I made some calls and did some digging and discovered that I can put together a package myself that is what I have now for about $30 a month less than what I'm paying now. The rub is that I paid for a year's worth of service to my ISP in November. I always pay every year and was always told that I could bail at any time and get a pro-rated refund.
So this morning I call and find out this was changed 2 years ago "it's right there on our website". So I will not be getting $400 back. I was calm and polite and soon found myself talking to the CEO who was a little full of himself (he said he would fire anyone who did not give me top notch service - right) but finally offered to review my phone bill and see what he could do.
The nut is that I pay Qwest $38,00 a month for my DSL line (their fastest) and then pay the ISP on top of that. I could, it turns out, for the same money, get Qwest's basic internet service and then use a hosting company (for $50 a year) for the other stuff that I currently get from my ISP. I pointed this all out to him - emphasizing how sad I was that after all these years, this comes down to my feeling screwed.
So he has my phone bill. We will see. But, I think I'm pretty much screwed until next November.
But, then I got to thinking about that $38. Seems like it wasn't that much before. So I pulled out last month's bill and sure enough it was $28! WTF? So I called Qwest. Qwest gave me some line of baloney about a special rate that ended and turned me over to loyalty who finally gave me a monthly price of $31.50 instead of my original $28.00.
A bunch of sleezebags - all of them. I am fully prepared to pay a reasonable sum for services rendered. But I feel like I'm in a giant Russian roulette of services and prices. And I'm losing ...
Oh well. There are alternatives. Come November, I'll be picking one.
Work is kind of slow but that's ok. I'm fine with slow for right now. I know there's a big project starting up next week so I'm resting up.
