My eBay auction is done and at a decent price except that the person who bought it, AFTER the auction ended, sends an email that before he (guessing here) decides to buy it, he wants to check the serial number. Couldn't have asked for the number earlier in the week???? So I send it and hear nothing. Probably won't get paid either. Crap. This is one of the many things I hate about eBay. I love it when it works but when it doesn't it sucks like an Electrolux.

But that's not eBay's fault!

No offense intended!

Stupid people will always find a way to mess things up. :(

It kind of is eBay's fault. They've tried to set up a system that won't screw people over, and that has at least somewhat failed. On the other hand, most participants seem happy with their experience, so as businesses go, eBay is relatively successful.

Yeah, but you can't underestimate stupid people. And it's hard to test for them...

No argument here, and I can use the reminder...

Before he decides to buy it?!? He already has bought it! I guess I've been lucky in never encountering a flakey buyer on eBay.

I think there is some way of offering it to the next highest bidder, if that proves necessary.

i'm pretty sure you can file a non-paying bidder complaint after 7 days, and then 8 days after that, you can relist the item.

And write him up. He won the auction, he bought it! Save others the same problems with someone that doesn't live up to their part of the bargain.

I think he should be written up just for threatening not to buy it without the SN after he won the bid.

All that should be taken care of after the auction is closed is 'Send the money' and arrange the shipment. Anything else is unneeded hassle.

What a pain! I don't know if I'd have the patience to deal with crappy internet buyers. I love your bitch icon though.

Rules, scmules, and 45 days my ass. If someone hasn't paid me or at least told me payment is on the way within 3 days, the item gets relisted or a second chance offer is made and the original buyer gets bad feedback from me. If someone says they are sending a money order and its not in my hand within 10 days, same thing.

So far, in a couple hundred auctions, I've only had two non-payers.

Seriously, eBay may have rules that say otherwise...to be honest, I've not read over the rules lately. But regardless of the official rules, and if you buy and sell as much as I do on eBay (keep in mind, for instance, I've even bought my last three vehicles off eBay), you'll find that most every seller who isn't a newbie expects notification within 3 to 5 days, and actual payment by 7 to 14 days. And the great majority state "ask all questions *before* the auction ends". When I sell something that I know is going to bring more than $50, I spell my requirements out in the auction itself.

A few weeks ago I sold a couple of cellphones (Motorola Razr V3c). In those, I didn't even bother with "auction"...$149 sale price, $10 shipping, PayPal only, and immediate payment required. Both sold, and were paid for, in 7 hours.

I have done exactly the same as Davmoo!!! I have only had two non-payers in over 6 years. I seldom sell anything anymore, but would do exactly what he said.

Hopefully, it will just work itself out.

I have a guy at the moment who bought the thing, paid me for it immediately, but won't provide me with a current address - he wants to pick up.

That's fine, I said, he could pick up from my work (I work in the city, I can leave it with the receptionist, no big drama; and out post service has gone to shit since those buildings in your neck of the woods got bulldozed by planes - why that should affect our postal service, I'm not quite sure), except he keeps failing to show...

If he hadn't paid me, that would be fine; but since he has, I either have to pay to refund the money, so I can relist, or I have to try and find an address for him so I can post it, and have him complain bitterly that I didn't deliver like asked.

Like you said, it's great when it works...

Haha, it's all worked out ok in the end. I just picked a bad time to be trying to organise things with the guy. Turns out he's a student type, and he lives right by one of our most popular pubs. I suspect he's also something of a stoner.

He emailed me yesterday apologising profusely and gave me his address & some money for postage, and said I could post or deliver at my whim.
