So the woman handling Mom's estate sends a letter out to me, my sister and my brother basically saying that as soon as I sign one last document (enclosed) she'll close the estate and send out the final distribution.  Finally.  Whew.  I'll be so glad to get this off my back and mainly because with it comes the potential for yet another sister outbreak.

And I think I smell one coming.

Last Summer, when it came apparent what the end numbers were going to look like, she (the estate handler) asked if I wanted her to do a partial distribution.  $x to each of the three of us.  I said fine.  It was my understanding that when the estate was finalized, we would each get about 1/5th of x (except my sister's amount would be reduced by the value of the loot she carted off - which she agreed to).

Today's letter implies that we will each get $x (again!) plus the 1/5th of $x.

I am sure that the implication is misleading and the truth is we will each get 1/5th.  But when my sister reads the letter she's going to think she's hit yet another jack pot. I'm guessing she'll have the $x spent by the time I hear from the estate lady tomorrow morning.

When the estate lady tells me that I am correct, I am going to get her to send my sister a letter of clarification.  I am sure not going to take the fall for this.

This closing of the estate thing has been like the other shoe not dropping yet.  I'll be so glad when it does.

Uh oh. I think a letter of clarification is definitely in order.

My aunt Cheryl has been going through a lot as one of the executors in my grandmother's will. Including one of my other aunts taking back jewelry she gave Gram before the jewelry was divided among the female descendants, as specified in the will. :-/

I have three Grandparents near or past the age of 90. Completely aside from not looking forward to losing them, the aftermath of estate distribution in each case is going to be a hairball, and I am glad to be far away. Not any arguments I need to be drawn into.

Before I retired I worked in the trust department of a very large bank, where I handled the estate distributions for deceased trust (read BIG $$$) customers. Amazing how, having met the lovingly introduced family when the clients were up and kicking, those same family members turned into sly, sticky fingered sneaks. It was sad.
