My Mom lived for the day 'the kids leave home and the dog dies'.  I heard that at least once a week growing up. My parents were not big pet people.  We usually had a dog but the dog was a dog.  And we had at least one dog that after years of failed obedience or any other training, won himself a one-way ticket to the pound.  (My brother and sister were told he was hit and killed chasing a car.)  We sometimes had kittens but they never lived to be cats.  I'm not pointing fingers, but...  only making the point that PETA would never have approved of my family.

I'm not that much better.  Really, I'm not.  PETA would not approve of me either.

But I do amuse me when I defer to Jake and Betty.  This morning, after my shower, I decided to wash the sheets and duvet cover.  But, I had to wait because Jake likes to sleep in.  I was working away and I heard him at the water bowl, so I hopped up and stripped the bed before he noticed.

Once the stuff came out of the dryer, I dropped the sheet onto the floor and carried the duvet cover into the bedroom to put it back on the duvet before he got his cat hair all over it.  I got the bed all put back together, he hopped on.

Then I went back to the dryer to fold up the clean sheet and put it in the cupboard and, yes, Betty was smack in the middle of it.  Where she remains now some 4 hours later.  I guess I'll put it away when she's done.  She's gotta eat sometime.

I will kick them off the chaise and out of my desk chair and move them sometimes but mostly if they got their first, they got dibs.  Sigh.

[Edit for a couple of points: 1. Neither of my parents - particularly Mom - was all that wild about kids either. They were of the generation who had kids because they were supposed to but I don't think it was their first choice. 2. I am not cruel to my animals but I'm not going to pay to have their teeth cleaned either. I won't even pay to have my teeth cleaned.]

Did you have any brothers or sisters who "went away to visit your grandmother," but never came back?

If I tried to clean Phoebe's teeth, at minimum I would lose at least three fingers in the process.

Seriously, I love my dogs, and they live better lives than most dogs. But I still don't do things like teeth cleanings and such like that. Other than maybe the metric shitload of bones and treats they get, if its not natural for a dog, it doesn't happen here.

We have a towel bar shortage so I lay my towel across my chaise to dry. That's exactly where Little One chooses to rest. How weird am I for feeling flattered that she wants to be cuddled up on a Judy-scented towel. Then again it probably smells like Lever soap so maybe it's not me after all. I should just toss my towels in the laundry basket because after a cat naps on my towel, I can not re-use it.

Pay to have a cat's teeth cleaned? HA! That's what kibble is for. And so what if it has chum breath. It licks it's own butt, so minty fresh butt is still butt.

I figure my cat is just happy I encourage it to kill stuff.
