My friend, Patty.  She loves email lists.  Several years ago someone told her to put everyone on the bcc list and let 'er rip and she does. She sent me stupid internet jokes. I sent her an email asking to be left off of any and all bulk mails.  I got the emailing on the book list she wanted to start.  I asked her to please leave me off any and all bulk mails.  I got the email about her looking for houses to house sit.  I asked her to please leave me off any and all bulk mails.

Are you seeing a pattern here?

She's a nice kid.  I like her a lot and she's having a tough time. She quit her job and went back to school to get her masters in library science.  And has, for the past at least 2 years, been looking without success for a library job.  She had a great interview in December but, a couple of weeks ago, sent out a bulk email saying she didn't get the job.

Then last week she sent out another with a subject of 'networking' saying she had decided to give up on library and find an executive assistant or office manager position.  I replied and gave her a couple of suggestions.  We were supposed to have lunch tomorrow so in the note I said 'we still on for Tuesday?'

I have not heard another word - bulk or otherwise.  I don't know if my reply went to her junk mail, if she read it and didn't like my suggestions or what but I'm done.  Next time I get a note from her addressed to her, it is going into my junk mail.  And I'm too annoyed to have lunch tomorrow.

There, I've whined and now I'm moving on.

Is Patty local? Her not being able to get her job after getting her MLIS doesnt surprise me but it is a bit sobering. Thats what Aron is working on right now, and once he graduates I'm guess there is a 75 % chance he'll have to move for a job.

With UW churning out new MLIS's on an annual basis it's not really the best place to look for a library position.

One might think a Live Journal or Blog of some sort would truly solve Patty's problem: she could keep the world updated and solicit advice in one tidy package without annoying folks with the "Bulk e-mail." The bulk E-mail to keep in touch system is antiquated and unnecessary now that Blogs are so popular. Might you suggest this to her? But suggest Blogger so she doesn't try to be your LJ friend.
