So...  we tried all kinds of things.  I even pulled out a memory stick to see if 4GBs was making it choke and 2GBs would make it happier.  Nope.

It won't fix.  It won't restore. It won't install.  I can get safe mode any time I want and that is it.

The dude finally threw in the towel about 3:20 (his shift ended at 3:30?  coincidence??) and bucked it up to the brains who are going to contact me.  Honestly, I was glad to get off the phone by that point.

I have learned a lot about Vista and about the hardware stuff.  There are a couple of things I'm going to try - probably tomorrow.  And the first one is one that davmoo suggested - get in there and make sure everything is set in tight and plugged in tight and generally ship fit together.  And I'll probably plug the old one back in.  

The new one may not work but it is sure pretty.  nt, you asked about the looks.  It's loaded with great looks. The lights and the innards are really fun to look at.  Pictures to come.

But not tonight.  I am beat.  I had to catch up on some work work and I'm starving.  I had only a hotdog to eat yesteday and nothing so far today.  Vista diet?  I am having dinner.  For sure.

Wow Susan, sorry about your Vista woes. There seems to be a lot of discontent from the bloggers about it (i.e. "Cracked Windows" (http://advancedmediacommittee.typepad.com/emmyadvancedmedia/2007/02/cracked_windows.html) ).

Wellllll, I just have to hook up the FireWire and audio connections and I'm ready to switch my box on and see what it does. Hopefully it will do something.

Are you sure it is just Vista and not some hardware glitch, or do you know?

You have way more patience than I do. I would have screamed and sent it out the window by now. Well, not quite, but good for you.

(just skimming the lj before my flight home, but...) have you jiggled the cable connecting the hard disk to the motherboard to see if it's solidly connected?

This reminds me of a PC I built years ago as a hobby project. It kept doing all kinds of funky stuff and I finally pinned it down to a processor that was overheating. Just a thought.

I talked to M's brother-in-law (who's a Microsoft technician) last night and he said he wouldn't dream of installing Vista on his personal computer at home at this point...far too many issues to iron out with it. Crazy that it took so long to release it and this many bugs!

Oh I'm sure most Microsoft technicians feel this way. They have to deal with this stuff all the time. It's not fun or interesting for them. I, on the other hand, think it's fascinating to see the new stuff and I'm not dependant on it - I have another computer for play and my work computer plus my old desktop.

I'm not that bummed - it's all part of the learning process. It will work out and I will be smarter!
