I just got a note from my brother "the blond is in the house"...

When I decided to send the computer back to him, I did some quick and sloppy research on how much the various shipping options would be.  Since it was Saturday morning, I knew I could get it to the post office in the International District fairly easily and a guess at how much it weighed showed that the USPS price was cheaper than or equal to my next best option - UPS.  But, UPS always seems so expensive to me and slow.  So, off to the post office.

I forget what the option I picked was but the cute little guy said it would get there Wednesday or maybe Tuesday.  It cost me about $40.  I asked him if he could put it in the fast lane and he giggled.

I guess he did cause it's now all over the work table in my brother's shop.  He's thinking mother board and reports that he's working Intel warranty and his vendor in parrallel to see who comes through first.

I still can't believe that fabulous postal service got it there in what was essentially a day and a half.   Pretty impressive.

I ordered crib sheets from one vendor last Wednesday night. They shipped on Thursday via USPS and they got here today. I also ordered mattress covers from target.com on Tuesday. They shipped them on Friday via UPS ground. They don't even have a tracking number for me. The estimated delivery date is March 1-9.

The one good thing I can say about UPS is they'll put a lot more effort into finding out where things are meant to go. I keep dealing with envelopes returned to sender for itty bitty mistakes or just stupid mail carriers. Two of my baby shower invitations got returned two weeks after I sent them because I had the zip code off by the last digit. (A difference of two blocks.) They wrote in the correct zip and then returned them to sender.

Y'know, I wish more vendors offered USPS. Where they are offered as an option I go for them because they have no vested interest in giving your order a long stand (extremely old mechanical engineering apprentice abuse joke). I often see UPS packages resting at the local "wait until delivery day" facility at San Pablo.

I was just talking to my mother about the destruction of the Post Office in the UK, the Labor government has decided they get better backhanders from the private sector and is trying to kill off the UK Postal Service, they used to be a great source of revenue for the government but their service hasn't remained competitive and they are dying on their feet. Sad end to the service that started it all.

Up until recently Stampin' Up! (tm) (gotta trade mark that in case they see it and decide to sue me.) had standard shipping with UPS, but if something was backordered they would drop it in the regular mail when it came in. No idea why but that's what they did. I've had backorder stuff get here before the regular order because it only took a week to get the things from the supplier and UPS takes 10 days to ship from Utah to North Carolina.

USPS == Good
UPS == Bad
