I have just had a major weight lifted from my job life. At this point in my life I do not want the kind of job that pays big bucks and makes me responsible for understanding the big picture, providing critical advice to executives, knowing which battles to fight for the corporate good and fighting them.

I am a well paid flunky and I love it. But, I have learned that the key to being a very happy and satisfied well paid flunky is to have a magic manager. Remove the magic manager from the equation and you have one frustrated flunky. That has been me recently.

Today the CEO hit me with a request that was 1) the wrong thing to do and 2) not a battle that I'm paid to fight. I really like and admire the guy and appreciate that he doesn't have the view he needs to make the decision he wanted to make.

It was the straw... camel's back, yadda yadda. Before she left to have the baby, my manager said 'call me if you need me. really. call me.' I never have. I did today. I got voice mail and left her a message that I really needed a quick chat please.

I needed to know that 1) she was absolutely coming back to work, preferably in January and 2) she still was interested in the company and the work and 3) she was going to bail my fat ass out.

The answer to all three is YES!!! Whew. She is going to work 3 days a week in January, from home and then back here full time in February. This will be fine. She totally understands my frustrations, has had a few conversations with people like the CEO and Mr. Important and understands the problems. And agrees that I'm not the person to fix everything. I cannot tell you how relieved I am. I am one happy flunky once again. Whew!!

I was usually happy to come out from under the rug once a year for the annual housecleaning. The rest of the time, I was (you know) snug as a bug in a rug.
