So I hit 'restart'. Restart (or even boot up) in Vista has the following touchpoints.

1. blue and green Vista background with the words 'shutting down'
2. computer goes to black and then starts to come up again.
3. computer start - the pre-bios sccreen, the bios screen
4. the windows loader - you get a little green thermometer showing that it's load up
5. black screen
6. the Vista hourglass (which is a little blue and green rotating circle)
7. Vista logo
8. login

I'm now hung at #5.

Been hung there now for about 40 mins.

It's really not very comforting, to be honest.

Edit: 47 minutes total but now it's up and seems quite zippy. Geesh!

Hmm, do you have any USB devices plugged in? I have a bad USB thumb wireless modem that hangs up about that point (XP,though) more times than not.
It'll soon make it's way to the trash, but I hate giving up on things, so it'll probably just hang around and I'll try it over and over.

I do.. I have several USB things plugged. In. I'm back up now and running fine but those babies just got moved to the top of the troubleshooting list for next time.

my vista system boots quickly but it has *no* external peripherals. maybe you didn't want to hear this :)

Actually, I found what appears to be some good direction on http://thevistaforums.com/index.php?showforum=54 - working on it but it's looking good so far.

Vista and I are newly aquainted and having a hard time getting to know each other. It seems that my Kodak software and Vista hate each other. I hate it when my friends fight.
