I found out today that the people who have been getting my teddy bears have plenty and don't have room for more.  So I have to find new homes for them.  There is a columnist who writes in my morning paper and he does a lot of human interest stories and his email address is publicly available so he got the first shot.  I sent him a note this afternoon explaining the situation.  Ideally, I'd love to have someone who would come by every month and pick them up and take them to somewhere they would be cuddled.  We'll see.

If he doesn't come through, there are some other reporters around town who might be willing to cough up a good idea.

Plan B is to hold them all the teddy bears until Christmas and take them to some toy gathering place.  That could get crowded ... 9 months of teddy bears.

Work finally quieted down after about 3.  I did finally get that bitch's stuff done.  I told her I'd have it done by Monday morning.  So, I'm going to split the diff.  I'll send her an email tomorrow afternoon and tell her it is done.  If she had half a brain, and/or could read my emails, she'd see it was done by checking the web page.  But, I know she won't.

I have a little work to do tomorrow.  Actually I could probably do it Monday but I'll go ahead and get it done tomorrow.

The new little wireless adapter came today.  Zonet.  Plugged it in to one of the USB ports and Vista had it installed and working in no time.  Unplugged the ethernet cable and bam, I was still connected to the internet.  Nice.  Now, next time that stupid ISP of mine goes down, I can mooch off one of my neighbors with any of the computers.

Next project is to get all of the computers to show up on the network map.  They all show up but two of them sit down at the bottom and won't hook up to the pretty map.  Interestingly, the help stuff says you need to have a special Link Layer Topology Discovery protocol installed to see any XP machine.  Well one of the ones showing up has the LLTP but the other one - also showing up, does not.  Curious.

But, now I'm going to do some very necessary TiVo catch up.

have you thought about the local police department? they're usually in need of teddy bears because they give them to children when they are involved in calls.

Up until several months ago, my wireless network was unsecured. The main reason was that I could't get my son't Netgear Game Adapter to work with my Linksys router when WEP was enabled (they worked fine without WEP).

However, my cheap-ass neighbor (retired bank exec) didn't want to pay for internet, and asked my wife if he could piggyback off of our network. Considering several other things he's done that were presumtious on his part, I became determined to figure out how to enable WEP so that he couldn't mooch off of me anymore.

I now have a secure network, and interestingly, since enabling WEP, my son's Xbox no longer lags when playing online. Apparently, the neighbor had been using some of my bandwith for a while. It's no one's fault except mine, since I left the network unsecured. My thoughts are that if you leave your network unsecured, it's fair game for anyone.

When I get curious about whether anyone is on my router, I connect to it's setup interface and look at the log for any DHCP requests. My laptop and the desktop are the only things that should be getting IP addresses from the router and so far they are. I'd think that yours has some sort of logging also.

Sorry for the delayed response.

As for how to tell if someone is piggybacking onto your network: try Air Snare (http://home.comcast.net/~jay.deboer/airsnare/index.html). This would seem to be something that would be right up your alley (knowing how you like to try new things).

Please post this to [livejournal.com profile] scendan's page. She works for a group which has an annual teddy bear drive for a shelter.

Here is an organization in Seattle that takes such donations and offers to pick them up, as well. I used to donate my son's used clothes there when we lived in Seattle. I imagine they'd happily pick up the bears.

I apologize for the lack of HTML skills there.
