Day 10

25 mins on the treadmill at 2.5.  I tried reading one of the magazines but quickly figured out that the magazines they have are the kind you flip through - nothing really to read.  So tomorrow I'm going to take my Time - more reading less page turning.

Tomorrow I'm going to ask Jerome about some different things.  I can do 25-30 on the treadmill every day.  I'm pretty sure about that.  But the exercises aren't impressing me.  I'm wondering about some of the other machines around there.  Or weights or something different.  And maybe a every other day kind of after-the-treadmill routine.  Day 1 do these 4 things.  Day 2 do these 4 things.  Day 3 do Day 1's stuff. etc.  I think that would suit me.

Today there was only one other person - I think.  He was a HUGE and I mean HUGE guy in length and width on the treadmill next to me.  He made me feel tiny.  He did not pay one bit of attention to me but as he was between me and the rest of the room, he was kind of my room eclipse.  I don't know if there were other people there or not.  He was there when I got there, going at 2.5 and he was still there when I left - same pace.  Steady Giant Eddy.

From "I'm happy being a slug" to "More weight now!!! And what does that machine do!' in less than 3 weeks. Impressive.

However, the thing to worry about most right now for you is injury by overuse. Your stamina and muscles are developing great, but joints and ligaments usually take a little longer, even if they feel fine. Those need to be strong and comfortable and ready to take the increases with you. An injury now would be a terrible setback, because it would stop this new healthy habit cold before it could develop.

When I was exercising as you are now, here's what I was doing:
M, W, & F >> 1 mile of treadmill @ a programmed up hill & down dale route at a moderate pace; 10 miles on a recumbent bike (the kind that lets you rest your back at the same time your legs are swirling like mad; 2 sets of 10 repetitions @ 15 pounds on their torture machines; 2 sets of 10 weight lifts in a variety of configurations for upper body strength.
Tues & Thurs >>> 1 mile of treadmill, 10 miles on the bike, no machines, but about 30 minutes of some sort of movement in the pool. I always used the floating toys. My favorite part was the 10 minutes in the jacuzzi after that.

Then, I got pneumonia really bad for a really long time, misplaced my confidence that every exhalation would be followed by an inhalation, watched my momentum evaporate, and proceed to pack on 30 more pounds.

I got in a good 6 months, though. You're reminding me of the euphoria I felt...

I like switching from one machine to another since it can be pretty boring doing the same thing. I like the Elliptical - I can burn more calories / minute on it than the others. Also varying speed and inclination on these machines seems more interesting to me. At higher speeds feet and legs take a pretty significant pounding on a treadmill and the Elliptical avoids that.

But as [livejournal.com profile] fj says be careful that you don't injure yourself so don't overdo it. See what Jerome says.

I find it hard to read on these machines but I enjoy using my iPod on shuffle and I have a lot of stuff of different kinds so the variety - a movement of a piano concerto, followed by some jigs and reels from a contra dance CD, followed by some jazz, etc. gives interesting variety.

Something to listen to

I've gotten to really love downloading podcasts to my phone (I added a 1 GB SD card) and listening to great things through my bluetooth. This can be quite nice to listen to when taking a walk. Have you heard of the Kindlings? They have a Monday night show in Seattle and make a podcast. Find out more at http://www.thekindlings.com/about/ But that can be kind of heavy stuff. Griddlecakes Radio is fantastic. Great stories and the podcasts are under 30 minutes. But he only does 2-3 per month. American Public Media has some great ones.....Speaking of Faith, Splendid Table, Garrison Keillor and Lake Wobegon. You may even find a knitting podcast or something. Something for everyone out there.

Take care!

Ohhhh!
