Nice evening
Dec. 24th, 2002 09:25 pmWe have rain and we have cold but it's not nearly cold enough. Looks like the northeast is going to get snow and the northwest is going to get rain. Sigh. Oh well.
I am totally engrossed in a book that should be of no interest to me whatsoever. Seabiscuit is about a thoroughbred race horse in the 30's. During one of my newspaper reporter stints when I was oh so young, I was assigned the thoroughbred horse beat. I knew nothing about horses, I mean nothing - never had any interest whatsoever. I learned fast but never did develop a real interest. I liked beating the trainers and jockeys at backgammon and taking their money but horses and horse racing... no interest.
This book about Seabiscuit came out more than a year ago. Everyone raved about it and I got sucked in. It's been on my Half.Com and my Amazon wish lists for ever and finally hit my thresh hold of under $3. So I ordered it and it came last week.
I've started and put down the last three books. One of them I gave up after reading 300 pages. It's been a bad spell. So I was expecting this one to be added to the string of losers. Not so. It's fascinating. This woman - Laura Hillenbrand - knows how to tell a story. I suspect she could make The Historical Significance of Brocoli interesting.
