Sherry sent an email that she bought some Ben and Jerry's Creme Brule that turns out she didn't like so please would I come get it?  I had something I kept meaning to take down to Lee for her mother so I grabbed it and a spoon and left here in the middle of the 1st inning and went downstairs to their unit.

They had the game on their HDTV.

Whoa.

I love my new TV and it is bigger than theirs (and a little sleeker looking if I do say so myself) but I cannot see the zits on the pitcher's nose and they sure can.  On my TV close plays have a bit of an impressionists feel.  On their TV, I feel dirt on the bottom of my feet.

Amazing.

BUT, I'm not yet ready to make the concessions I'd need to in order to have HDTV.  One day I'll be forced to do it and maybe I'll figure out a way around my current constraints between now and when I'm forced but until then, I'm pixelated and ok with it.

Sherry and Lee go out of town enough so that I can get a lot of use out of their HD!

And, the ice cream is really too sweet BUT cut with my vanilla, it will make a nice little milkshake, I think.  I have very nice neighbors.

I was showing someone the difference the other night and saw an open box 60" 1080p tv for $1200... I didn't, but if I'd been in the truck I might have.

you know ...

you can go get a "HDTV antenna" (not really HDTV-specific, but they call them that to make for easier marketing) for about $20 or so. with one of these connected to your tv, change the input to ATSC or RF or Antenna or whatever your set calls this sort of connection.

i wasn't so big on the creme brulee ice cream from ben and jerry's--it's has the carmelized top smooshed into the ice cream, and the texture just isn't right.

Here's the deal with HD: Everyone will make the transition to HD eventually, it's an FCC rule thing. So paying for it now is sort of silly (I say this as someone who is paying for it), as it will come down in price for your HD packages on cable and satellite.

The place where HD really makes a big difference isn't on your run of the mill tv shows, it's on things like sporting events, where there's a lot of movement over time. You can pick out the individual faces in the crowd, it's so clean. Which is awesome. But not required in order to watch the Mariners get your hopes up for a win and then crush them in the 9th.

That's close, but not exact. Over-the-air TV stations are making the transition to digital TV, but that doesn't mean it has to be HD. They can just take a standard TV signal and "upconvert" it to a digital signal. So you might or might not be getting real HD signals through your digital TV connection. And cable/satellite can do whatever it wants-- it doesn't really need to change anything, although more and more providers are using a HDTV channel because people are more people are demanding it.

Sorry, that was rambling. In any case, I want HDTV, and I'm jealous of anyone who has it right now.

True, your situation is a little different. I was reading a thing at work the other day about people who have TVs capable of getting HD signals, but who chose not to get HD programming. That fascinates me for some reason. I can't say I blame you at all though. I might be tempted to put up an antenna to get HD signals, but that would be about it.

Every now and again we chat desultorily about what we're going to do come 2009. The simple answer is to replace the TVs with digital ones, and sure, why not get HD while we're at it. The catch is that we own four TV sets.

Oh, yeah, we have cable... I'm not really sure what we do or do not have to do. HD would actually be nice (especially since NESN has decided that everyone has or should have it, and displays the out-of-town scores in a font in which zeroes, sixes, and eights look more or less identical in LD), but not if it's going to cost lots of money (FSVO "lots").

sorry about KC

KC is only a symptom. The distressing thing is that they've won exactly 20 of their last 40 games. They can't survive if they keep this up.
