Ok, here's the problem.  My living room has a corner for seating.  But, honestly, the current configuration only has practical room for 2 butts.

The purple sofa is pretty but because of the big coffee table you can't get to it.  Plus, I've been kind of thinking it would be nice to have something more comfortable - something maybe even nappable.

I think maybe the coffee table has to go.  Does it?

The chaise is there cause it's handiest for watching TV, otherwise it's totally movable as is the rest.

There's an older photo here showing where the corner of the desk is ....

So... what do I do?  Replace the table? with what?  Rearrange?  How?  Replace the purple loveseat?  with what?  Replace the green chair?  With what?  I need LJ condo therapy.  Whaddaya think?

Hmm. I'm not sure, but here's a thought that might or might not do any good. What if you mvoed the purple seat so it curves across the front of the door bit to the right (sort of in the open space between it and the green chair, partly), and then moved the green chair in between the purple and the chaise. You might have to juggle the coffee table a little for access purposes, but you wouldn't have to maintain space on three sides of the table, only two.

I think I'll have room in the car for that coffee table when I'm up your way next week. ;-)

But srsly, put it on the balcony. Buy a small end table for the kleenex.

Or just slide the coffee table against the chair the cat is on. Scoot the purple sofa a little bit more parallel to the balcony, and you're accessible.

Catch many naked guys with that telecope?

fj is in Oakland/Bay area right now, you need for him to get back and give his input.

I suck at this. I have not gotten my own living room where I love it, I sure would not presume to do someone elses.

This is a rather late-in-the-game comment, but I would forgo the coffee table. You are right. It is big, and it kind of impedes the traffic and weights things down. If it were me, I think I'd go for a nice sofa. You truly can't go wrong with a nice sofa -they are nap-able, and then, I would keep the little green chair and the purple "love seat." It's easier to have a variety of seating arrangements with smaller seating and a sofa.

There is a wonderful "Danish" furniture store in the University District by Whole Foods (Roosevelt area). We have a fantastic red sofa from there, and we love it. It is very modern, but very comfortable and not so big. We use it in the "home theater" part of our house, so it gets a lot of sitting on your but time. It's covered in that "moleskin" stuff, which seems to magically shed stains -very washable. I'm sure they would have something in a complementary color.

I like your chaise, but if I were trading something out for a sofa, I would pick that. You can always get a funky little end table and put it between the arms of a sofa and chair as a place to set things.

I am a big fan of lots of small tables. In place of a coffee table in our living room, we have two wooden, Asian styled trunks (Square) I put them close together in front of the sofa for a coffee table, but they also make nice end tables. I like the look, and you have more options on how to use them. Small tables also make it easy to make the table use proportionate to your seating area -which sometimes changes in size depending on what you're doing.

Whoooo. Sorry for the long post. I have so enjoyed seeing photos of your house. I LOVE houses and interior design.

Yay! That sounds great. I have to admit, I really like your chaise. I have always wanted one. We have a white chair w/ ottoman in our office, and it's just so nice to have that sort of option while you are working/hanging out. I would like to have a TV in there, so I could hide, although watching movies on the flat panel monitor does the trick, as well.
