Mom and Christmas next year

susandennisMom finally gave me the details of her trip to Jacksonville and they were pretty sad. She got very lost and called my brother who told her that she was too far away for him to come get her. (Now he likely meant that it would take so long that she would not want to wait but the message she heard was more along the lines of he was not willing and too lazy.)
She had to stop three times to get people to help her read the directions he wrote out. Her cellphone was roaming and she didn't know what do to with it and how to use it. She described the whole thing as horrible and I believe her.
As I've said, she gets lost driving around the town she's lived in now for nearly 20 years - what in the world makes her think she won't get lost driving in much more populated areas where she's never been??!!
I had made a passing stab at suggesting that she stay there for Christmas. I even waxed poetic on the beauty of quiet solitude. It was a total no sale.
This morning I get a note about a friend of hers who did stay there with no friends or family. This friend thought it was the greatest deal ever. She ate in the dining room on Christmas day and then found three other people to play bridge with for the rest of the day. Mom was very impressed. And I think has her little planning hat on for next year. I hope so.
One of these years she is not going to be able to get in her car and go and I think it would be more comforting if she made the decision not to do it before she got to the point where doing it was impossible.
