Technology's Typhoid Mary???
Sep. 12th, 2007 09:39 pmMy Roomba got back to HQ yesterday so today I called Sharper Image to see if I could goose the process along a bit. I used to be very impressed with Sharper Image's customer service. Then they really pissed me off about 3 times in a row and I quit using them for anything. But, this time, I don't really have a choice so they are getting another chance and they are making the best of it.
One thing they used to do and are doing again is answering the phone pretty much immediately. It rarely rings more than once and the telephone tree is really a tiny bush and then you have a Sharper Image person who does pre sales, post sales, anything else you want.
Today I got Debbie. Oh and they have your complete customer record which they can get to very quickly with your name and zip code. They do not care, apparently, what my Mother's maiden name is because they have never asked. Debbie gets my record, quickly grasps the story, checks UPS to make sure the return got there but was then stymied because she has to wait for some certificate. She says it will be there tomorrow or by Friday at the latest. I grown just the tiniest little bit and mention the build of of cat hair and she quickly offers free expedited shipping. She says she will call me when the certificate comes in.
But, the real clincher? She says "I'll call you but here's my extension. You won't need it but just in case anyway." Sharper Image may just have won be back. And I'm no easy win.

So, now that I have the Roomba situation under control, one of my TiVo's has an attack tonight. I'm trying to download some free NBC pilots via Amazon's Unbox and they are coming down the pipe so slowly that the season finale will be over by the time they get here. And, just in the middle of worry about that, the damn box goes black. Then then starts a reboot. WTF?? It comes back up and I check some stuff and go back to watching the ballgame and it does it again!! FOUR times it rebooted in the span of 30 minutes. This is the box that has been cooling its heels unused in the bedroom.
Bad harddrive and bad wireless adapter are the two most often mentioned causes of random reboots. I swapped out wireless adapters and that didn't do any good. Then I unplugged the offender and plugged it into the other USB port and so far so good. Been about an hour since the last reboot.
I still have the other TiVo that I can draft into duty but still. Pain in the butt.

I guess asking all of my technology to take a deep breath and chill for a while is asking too much.

My neighbor, Ann, had a great idea for the washer/dryer move out situation... The guys will be here probably late afternoon to do mine. So tomorrow morning, I'm off to Home Depot to grab me some of those furniture sliders! I'll get the dryer vent cleaner people to put them under the thing before they push it back in. She knows an electrician who will come out and help me move the things out and back if I have the sliders. She's so smart.
