The reinstall finished up and just then I remembered there is some kind of funky issue with the ethernet card in that machine.  The Dell drivers quit recognizing it a while back.

I got it working last time but no clue how and this time I tried a few things but finally said fuck it, I'll just use USB to connect the DSL modem to the machine.

Well, that wouldn't work.  I have limited non-motherboard hub USB ports on that machine so I said fuck that, I'll use the wireless adapter.

Well, it didn't like that either.  So.... I pulled out a cheapo wireless adapter that I got a while back and now can't remember why and bingo... finally...  whew!

Now it's giving me a attitude about downloading and installing updates.  Geesh.

If I need to hook the modem up to the computer directly, I can ethernet it to the Vista machine or, actually, any one of the other computers.

If it's not one thing, it's another...

I hate it when that happens. Except that you had a happy ending, finally finding the right work-around for the stupid thing. Nice work.
