I work for a small start up company. But we've got some people who think that if we pretend we are a big bureaurcatic outfit we will get more business? Be cooler? Generate revenue? Their latest edict is that the following paragraph be attached to every single piece of email that leaves the company.

The information transmitted herewith is intended only for the sole use of the individual or entity to whom it is addressed, and may be privileged, confidential or exempt from disclosure under law. If you are not the intended recipient, you are hereby notified that any review, retransmission, dissemination, distribution, copying or other use of, or taking of any action in reliance upon this information is strictly prohibited. If you have received this message in error, please contact the sender and delete the material (and all attached documents) from your system immediately.

I think, in a nutshell, it says 'here is a company that thinks it's a big fucking deal and everyone cares so they are positioning themselves for a really big law suit and hope you can join in.'

I work for a large company and we just did the same thing about a year ago. My dad's company has a whopping 14 people - only 2 have internet access, maybe I need to warn him about it too. hahaha

the best part is ...

... that it's a meaningless notice. did this come from an actual lawyer, or from some cluefree hr ninny?

One of the keys to Apple's early success was it looked bigger than it was. When they went to trade shows, they looked very big and slick. No one knew they were still operating out of a garage.

I'll bet that if during some law suit about something important that was disclosed via email, if it was revealed that this stuff is boiler plate on all email it would mess up their case.

The lawyers that I consult with (from several different firms) on patent infringement matters only include similar such wordings on email or snail mail that has content to be actually worried about.

what seems interesting to me is the part about receiving this by accident parts... like junk mail telling you to contact them to tell that you weren't supposed to receive it.... I consider anything that I receive unsolicited, is mine to do with as I please... like the satellite signals that used to be bombarded on my 12' diameter satellite dish... unsolicited... so the signals were mine...

also.... putting stuff like that on email makes the receivers of such back off... and not want to do business or respond or such... I found when I handed someone a model release to sign with all the legal information, it would intimidate and they wouldn't sign... I made it nice and simple and don't have any problems... the intent is what's important...

I'd rather see on the highways "drive friendly" like the signs used to say here rather than the demanding signs now being displayed... like "litter and it will hurt" and they then put the amount of the fine on the sign... someone's idea of being cute...

Peace

you are lucky to have someone to rant to without looking like you're causing the turmoil that should be generated over such

Peace

the before stated comment was only my opinion and may be changed at any time by me or anyone else who might have access to my account. It should not be considered confirmation of a contract or other obligation in any way and if someone does misquoute me or try to obligate me or otherwise make me look bad or whatever.... stick it... it's not nice to mess with other folks minds or funds... if you do, bad karma will get you, mother nature can be a bitch and gravity sucks... wanna prove it? just mess with me...

the before stated disclaimer and
threats promises were meant to discourage anyone wanting to defame or otherwise...

be nice

Peace
