I'm pretty sure I have a rapidly growing fatal tumor on my right side near the back just above my butt cheek.  Yesterday, it hurt when I did certain things.  So I stopped doing those things (brilliant, I know).  Last night it hurt when I slept!  I am a side sleeper and neither side worked well plus turning from one to the other to my back killed me.  I mean it hurt and bad.  I lay awake thinking of things to google and running through various dianosis.  I did not know exactly where my liver is so that was a suspect from about 2-3 a.m. (wikipedia ruled it out this morning cause it's not where I thought it might be).  I do a lot of sitting cross legged.  On the bed reading the paper, reading the computer.  On the chaise, working, knitting, watching TV.  This thing hurts like a sonofabitch when I set cross legged now.  This is tres inconvenient.

I was anxious to get to the gym to see if 1.  I could get there (no problem), 2.  if something in my program aggravated (maybe caused?) it (nope), 3.  if maybe moving around some and stretching and stuff might help.

I do feel a little better.  At least I know now there are positions I can sit in that are not really painful - like at this desk right now.  I have also taken some ibuprofen.  I need this to get better immediately.

But meanwhile I did manage to get through everything fine and dandy.  The only bit that was a little hairy was rolling my back over the big ball - at one point it was a killer but only for that one point.  The rest was fine.  Maybe a shower will help.

At first I thought it might be a pilonidal cyst but it doesn't sound like it's in the right place. My son had one and he was in excrutiating pain until it burst on it's own. Still had to have antibiotics for it. Feel better.

Just in case, have a look here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pilonidal_cyst

Sounds like sciatic pain to me. Mine starts in my lower back on one side and sort of goes down through my butt. Rolling over is a bitch for me too.

Comes and goes. There have been times when it was bad, and years when I didn't think about it. Right now is a bad time. I need to lose weight and exercise and I know I will feel better.

You are welcome. It is always good to be able to help out. The pillow between your knees should help a lot.

I need to find a way for your gym motivation to land on me!

You might try a rice sock - very cheap and easy, A rice sock heated in the microwave provides a wonderful moist heat, You can drape it over you while resting, sit your sore butt parts on or against it. I use it for a sort of traction when I get neck spasms, twisting it in the middle and bracing so the warm rice-filled bumps hug my spine and keep my head from scrunching down like a turtle's. Low backs and butts are harder, but sometimes pressure over the sorest area can make a spasm let go. Roll a rice sock into a ball, lie on your back and wiggle til it's right under the sore spot, and let gravity do the accupressure.

Directions for rice sock: Take one white cotton tube sock (I use extra-long socks), fill with el cheapo white rice. I've found the best tool for this is a mason jar filler, but I don't have one now so I have someone else hold it open. As the rice goes in, you shake every few seconds. Leave suffucuent room to tie an overhand knot (oh, and TIE the knot of course!) You end up with an overweight and distended sock puppet that has its panties in a knot.

I've sworn completely off store-bought heating pads because, for liability purposes, they don't get NEARLY as warm as they used to. With the rice I can control the heat. I recommend microwaving for 2 minutes, though I often do more or less depending on the circumstances. Smaller socks don't have to cook as long. If I want it hotter I'll go up to 2:30 but not higher that; a longer time allows scorching. Scorched rice doesn't catch fire in the microwave, but it does make both the microwave and the rice sock smell terrible.
