OCD - ish

I've noticed lately that I tend to get a little OCD-ish lately. I get something on my mind and I cannot get rid of it. It's like a brain itch that has to be scratched. If I think 'oh I need milk', writing it down on the list isn't good enough. Soon, I'm obsessing about milk and then I'm in the car on the way to the store.

Or yesterday when the sliders I had were too big for the ottoman legs. They worked fine, they were just too big so looked funny. No one was coming to look but after thinking about it for an hour, there was nothing I could do but get up and go get some.

Now it's the fucking chaise. I hate trying to give away free stuff. Wanters of free stuff seem to have a hard time undestanding the value of what they want. Or maybe they understand perfectly. I've had several people enquire. One - the photographer - sounded very interested. But no one seems interested enough to come get the thing. And it's making me a little crazy. It's in the front room. It's not blocking anything. I don't need the floor space for anything. I'm not expecting company. It just bugs me. I want it out of here.

One guy said he might come by tonight. I told him if he got here before 9:30 it was his. And I gave him my phone number to call to ensure it was still here. I know he won't call. He won't come. It will be here tomorrow. And Sunday. And Monday.

On Monday, I'm going to go ask Scott, my friend the building manager, if he has any suggestions. The trick will be to get it off of my mind until Monday.

I had Alan's crib I was trying to get rid of forever.
Tried ebay/Craigslist (didn't want it to go for free).
Finally placed an ad in our local paper - items under 100 can be advertised for free.

Got a call from someone 1 town over and sold it. The newspaper ad kept out the waste of time people/scammers on craigslist.

yes, they do

down here they even publish the classifieds online, too, so you don't have to soil your hands with soybean-based ink ...

Check the paper's online site. I was able to do mine on line which was easy.

I understand, I have a couch that a friend said they wanted months ago. It's out in my shed. Getting musty and dirty. I guess they don't want it THAT bad. I didn't want the chaise cuz it doesn't match. I already have enough stuff that doesn't match, yknow?

i totally understand

i have a bunch of stuff to freecycle (a working vcr, a KVM, some USB 2.0 hubs, ...) and i know that when i post it i'll get a bunch of flakes who will reply and i'll end up choosing the flakiest of the bunch to come and get it. i've been putting it off for weeks, and i'm in exactly the same spot: while the stuff is (nearly) out of the way, i still want it gone now but not enough to put it in the trash.

ugh.

Have you tried calling Salvation Army? Or seeing if there is an organization in your community that accepts unwanted furniture and gives it to someone coming out of homelessness? They will often do pickups, and if they will, your Chaise would be a real windfall for them. If your guy today doesn't show, maybe you can investigate whether you can give it to an organization that's used to taking donations - they'll probably be better about showing up when they say they will and I'm sure they'd be appreciative, plus, if it's a non-profit, you get a tax deduction! :)

Try calling the local social service agencies, or a local real estate agent. They may know of services that are not easy to find - it was a real estate agent who pointed me to both the most eager-to-pick-up charity in my area, and the cheapest junk hauling service (halved my bill compared to 1-800-got-junk).

If all else fails, there's always 1-800-GOT-JUNK? (http://www.1800gotjunk.com/us_en/). Paying to have stuff hauled away may not appeal, of course.

I say drag it into the elevator, lean it up against the wall and then push the button and go back into your place. Somebody'll get sick of it being in the elevator and get rid of it.
