So... this all started back with my database project. It just seemed to me like my Internet speed was sluggish. I kept measuring with Speakeasy's test and it would go down and I would reboot the modem and it would be ok for a while and then it would go down again and I'd reboot the modem...
This past week has been just the worst. I pay for the fastest DSL speed and yet my Speakeasy tests were in the 7 and 800's most days. After I rebooted the modem, they'd go up to the 2,000's sometimes and once up to 3,000 but rarely.
With work slow, it was the perfect time to deal with Qwest. So I called. The first guy I got was fine. Until he told me to unplug the phone from the modem. Which I did and, of course, disconnected the call.
The second time, I got a woman I could not understand. I hung up and called back.
I got a woman I could understand but really only understood that she was going to be a problem and she was. She took me through all kinds of tests and then walked me through changing the IP address on the computer which made no sense whatsoever.
Then I chatted with my brother who said he thought it sounded like a modem issue - my modem is 9 years old. So he said to call back and tell them that my internal network speed was fine, but that my modem needed to be replaced.
So I did. This time I got a guy called Ice. And he was one cool dude. In the Philippines. He had me do a bunch of tests. and pings. And we turned off the antivirus software and tested some more and sometimes it was ok and sometimes it was not and never was it good. But he just was not buying the modem replacement story. He finally asked if he could call me back in 5 minutes. He said he wanted to check with Level 3. I said fine.
He called back and said "Can you run the speedtest again?" The speed test showed 817 from the last time I had done it. I hit the button. WHAMO!!!!! 5,693!!!!!!! He said I had been suffering from network congestion and he had them move me to someplace not so congested.
I was ready to jump his bones over the phone. I didn't. But, I did ask if he had some kind of feedback form he could send me. I told him I wanted his manager to know what a great job he had done and how very happy he had made his customer. He was cute and when he finished he put his manager on the phone. His manager was just as cute and very appreciative and is going to send me a survey.
Meanwhile I'm now kicking myself for not calling a month ago! Now I'm doing a security update on my work laptop. The last time I did this it took an hour. Now it looks like it's nearly done after 15 minutes. WHEW!!!
