After explaining to Capital One about the check I mailed to a location 20 miles up the road 7 days ago - the same check that has not yet arrived there.

Capital One:  You could stop payment
Me:  But won't you charge me a fortune for that?
Capital One:  Well, there is a $25 charge
Me:  So what happens if I do not stop payment and some crook manages to cash it and run off with the money?
Capital One:  Well, Capital One will absolutely chase that down on your behalf and make sure you get the money back.
Me:  It sounds like stopping payment would be a far better deal for you.
Capital One:  Oh absolutely.  Do you want to stop payment?
Me:  Do you want to waive the fee?
Capital One:  Oh we can't do that.
Me:  Then, no thank you.

I know I'm being unreasonably stubborn.  The check is for $35,000.   $25 is a pittance in comparison.  And Capital One did nothing wrong.  There is no reason why they should waive their fee.  I am taking business away from them.  But, still...

Ok, now that I have typed all that out, even I can't justify it.

Just call them and say you will reconsider transferring out the money if they waive the fee. Wait a week then transfer it out.

People do that to me all the time!

The person you talked to said they'd chase after the money. One problem could be how long the chase takes since it might include court action or worse if the thief took the money out of the country.

If you stop payment you'd have no worry at all. I'd pay the $25 unless you have some other reason to get out of Capital One.

I don't like bank fees either. But were I talking $35k I believe I'd pay the $25 just for the peace of mind.

I had a similar conversation over a $12 check. I took my chances and wrote another check. But for $35000 I think I'd swallow the fee – and I'd be annoyed about it too, because it's outrageous mark-up for a service that costs them very little, maybe $2 or so.

I totally agree with you on principle... having not-so-long-ago talked Bank of America to waive a stop-payment fee. But, truth be told, I'd have paid it to stop a $220 transaction. $35K... yeah, it sucks but I'd pay it.

Besides... just because they promise to chase down the thief doesn't mean they'll be quick about it.
