On my terrace, I have two window boxes. Every year I go get 10 red geraniums and put them, pot and all, in to the window boxes. In the years when I remember to water them and remove old blooms, they do pretty well. Those years, however, aren't regular.

So my new great idea is to use non living things in those boxes this year - or actually all year around. I'm thinking possibly small wind spinners or wooden daisies or wooden tulips or something pretty and colorful that does not need care.

But, I have no clue if such things are even made. And I haven't quite fashioned a way to do get them to stick up in the window boxes (stuck in foam surrounded by rocks/dirt/fake grass)...

There's a kite shop over by Gas Works park that also sells windspinners and stuff. I might wander over there tomorrow and see what I can discover.

I used to find fantastic wooden flowers at IKEA -flowers, funky garden sticks...maybe some sort of cute garden votive candle holders or something. Anyway, you might go have a relaxing morning at IKEA strolling around looking at Spring things -when they first open, on a weekday...

Fred Meyer and WalMart both used to sell spinners (birds, insects). It also seems like something you would find at Pike Place market. Fill the window box with gardening soil, water it a little to pack it down and pretty much anything should be able to stick up in there.

If you find a good source of wind spinners I'm catching a plane over there and buying some! They are so difficult to come by around here and I always had a dream of a balcony full of them rather than ailing plants crying out for water all the time (why are they so needy!).

Happy birthday!! You're an inspiration to me being proud of your age, what a great attitude! I've always been a bit on the negative side about getting older, but maybe it's time that changed.

Have you considered glass flowers? Someone must sell them at a discount. They sell glowing ones here (http://www.countlessdiscounts.com/gasu/Attracting-Birds.html), and I kind of like the copper sunflower sunflower seed feeder they have for sale as well.
