I need a divorce accountant

My cpa retired last Summer. His firm carried on. They sent me their usual forms to fill out in January. I sent them a letter telling them I was not interested in their services any more.

In February they sent me a form letter saying they had not heard from me and if they didn't hear from me by the end of March they would file something on my behalf.

I called and told them that I was no longer interested in their services that I had a replacement CPA and that they had already been informed via snail mail. I followed up with an email.

Today I get a bill for $45 from them for filing that thing they said they would file when they didn't hear from me.

I called again. This time I talked to Mandy who said she would see that I was removed from further mailings. Then she put me through to Ryan who said he would reverse the invoice and that the earliest I could get written confirmation would be after April 15.

How glad am I that I found a new guy? These people are out of control. I have no doubt that this is not the end of this.

I'd be worried about what they sent off "on your behalf"

It's an application for extension. On the up side, I already filed my return and the IRS has cashed the check. I sent a note to my CPA but I'm not worried.

Yeah, I'd find out what they sent on your behalf stat, that could cause more problems than just the invoice. Not cool at all. Actually, I would call your new guy and ask how worried to be and what you need to do. That's probably better than being worried.

It's a 4868 for an extention. Fortunately, I checked my bank account and the IRS check cleared yesterday - tax return filed and note off to new CPA. I'm sure he's going to say 'no prob'.

but i think i'd like to. do you just collect all your incomings and outgoings in a shoebox and hand over the shoebox at the appropriate time?

Actually, most CPA's these days, have a form, I think. They are really easy and comprehensive. the form asks all the relevant questions and you fill it out and then turn it into with your last two years returns and wait for the call. Then they call you and ask you a bunch of questions like 'so you might have some extra expenses we can claim - did you ... etc.' and 'what did you pay for that stock you sold and when did you sell it' and 'what did you pay for that computer..' etc.

Then you wait for the call that everything is done and you get money back or pay. Plus 'for next year you might consider do this or that..'

I'm admiring your restraint. Today, I would have been on the phone, and I'm sure my first sentence would have been "OMG, you people are idiots!!!" :)
