Travis and I have now wired up everything. It's so nice of him to help. There was a lot of wire and cable pulling and rearranging and moving and a little bit of panic when I thought I dropped a critical phone wire down the back of the desk never to be recovered again. But I didn't and all was saved.
While under the desk, I also culled out everything not in use - one not-very-good Western Digital pocket drive, several USB cables, 2 power strips - one octopus and one regular, one wireless adapter. Then I went through a box o' stuff in the storage closet and moved most of it to the Goodwill bag and put the stuff from under the desk into the box.
The new modem is attractive so I could stand to have it on top of the desk rather than under it. I like to keep an eye on the lights.
I'm feeling quite organized. It's so much easier when you have a cat helping you. Well, not sooo much...

Date: 2008-04-12 01:35 pm (UTC)I'm glad you had some help... ~rolls eyes~
My two are old enough now that they couldn't care less what I'm doing. Well, unless I'm on my laptop then Baby must be in my lap.
Hooray for WIRES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Date: 2008-04-13 07:24 am (UTC)My first experience with wiring happened around five years ago - the cable people ran coax under the very edge of the carpet from the splitter at the only ingress (the house was 50 years old) into the one bedroom that abuts the front room. After that, because I had a second computer in a bedroom/den that the cable people said they couldn't connect unless I bought wireless equipment, I somehow managed to pull a shload of cable - 50 feet? possibly more - behind stationary furniture and under carpet and get my signal in my room. It was awesome.
So I tell my techie (only because he can afford to use stuff I can't buy yet) friend and he says "Wired, how very....quaint. When are you going to grow up and use wireless like the rest of the world?" Well poo on him.
Now I have two computers side by side in the front room that are hardwired through a router and it's not a problem. Except for one variable I CANNOT control - every time I find my husband online, he's on the fastest computer - not the kids' - and he's not jobsearching, looking for a new apartment, or finding someplace to eat. No, he is playing freecell. And sometimes going to his favorite band's website. Well, I was just gifted with my grandma's old computer, c.2000. It's something like 533mhz, upgraded RAM, 20gb hd. It's a slug. The huge kind. But hey, it has FREECELL. I SO want to run another wire from my last router port into the back bedroom so he can play freecell to his heart's content. That way I won't feel so bad kicking him off this machine.
