And I wasn't. And every year on this day I am reminded.

I went to an all girls' high school. No football. None. I went to a small private college that was big on soccer plus the 'sport' we participated in while I was there was marching for peace - not football. My husband was big on football - very big. And I loved football season. It meant every single weekend, I had long stretches of time to myself (can anyone point to one of the reasons why this marriage was pretty well doomed??).

I have a sport where you can see the faces and the players aren't giant rocks - they look like real people.

I just don't understand football and I don't think I ever will. I've had enough pre-game coverage. I'm ready to get this over with. This time tomorrow I will have a year before I have to face my failings again. I can live wiht that.

ah. don't worry about it. superbowl is usually little more than a reason to have a big party.
I have to admit, sometimes I like football. but it has to be a good game, not some one-sided runaway train. as I think back, at the moment, I can't recall a superbowl that didn't have a predetermined outcome. doesn't mean there wasn't one, just that I can't remember it, or maybe I didn't see it that year.
the problem I have with the superbowl is having it all rest on one game. I like the idea of a set of series determining who's the better team, like baseball and basketball do.

I'm with you on the football thing. And I don't understand it even though it has been explained to me upteenth million times. In fact, I'm not a big fan of any organized sport. I like to watch the olympics, but that's about as far as it goes.

I like Calvin Ball.

About this time every year, I have a short bout of confusion and anger about the superbowl; how can something so profoundly boring actually interest over 98% of the population - spanning gender, education, class, wealth, everything! And just as I start to feel really left out, I remember - I have about 3 hours during which I can go out into the world, and there will be no traffic, nobody in the stores (except the people working, who are all chosen from that remaining 2%. The streets are eerily empty, as if it were the middle of the night.

Back when I lived in Ohio, this happened twice a year; once for the Superbowl (when the whole country does it), and once for the annual rival game with Michigan (and occasionally a third one, should the Buckeyes be in the running for the championship). The problem with the Michigan game was, that every second year it was a home game, so after it was over, the city was overrun with fans. There are several instances of extensive vandalism on these days.

So, for you in the other 2%; what will you be doing during the Super Bowl?

It's the commercials. I love football. The Super Balls most often are very one sided. But if you miss the commmericails you won't know what 65% of the people will be discussing tomorrow. I know several people who don't especially like football but they watch on Super Sunday because of the commercials. I think a 30 second spot runs around 2 million bucks to air during the game.

Heh...I'll watch it if other people are, but it's not my thing either. So I don't think you're a failure.

It was on when I got home. The commercial for Bud Light with the clown upside down made me laugh hysterically. The whole game was worth that commercial. Is there a game in between the commercials?

One of the advantages of retiring is that I no longer have to check
the sportscast on Sunday night, so I can understand the office
conversations Monday morning and nod appropriately. I find almost all
sports lacking in interest.

Football: I understand the rules of football more than most other
sports, mostly from having spent years in high school and college as a
member of the marching band. However, this does not make it
comprehensible or interesting.

Basketball: They could shorten the game substantially by having the
two teams run laps for all but the last two minutes of the game ---
before the audience arrived --- and just play the last two minutes.
Probably wouldn't change more than one or two games a year.

Baseball: Close to the world's dullest game. [Only cricket beats it.]

Tennis: I have never understood the scoring, even after two
years being taught by the 1950-ish Czech tennis champion while in
high school in New Orleans.

Soccer: At least these guys spend almost all of the game
running up and down the field without time outs, unlike football and
basketball. I don't understand its rules, either.

Lacross: Incomprehensible soccer.

I had a very productive Superbowl

I cleaned the gutters, mowed the lawn, sprayed the peach tree and cut up branches and put them in the recycle thingy. Then it got dark and I came in. 3 hours after the game started, it was still the 3rd quarter. I never decided who to root for this time, since once again no Seahawks.

Personally I'd rather play (womens' soccer) than watch sports, but I will do it to be sociable and can get into it for 3-4 games a year (all sports combined).

However, I liked basketball much better when they wore short shorts instead of pajamas.
