I have this thing about computer memory. I cannot get enough. It almost does not have anything to do with machine performance. If I think it does not have enough memory then it feels too slow for me. There is no rationality. Back in the days when memory was scarce and expensive, it was a problem. But now that you can pick it up cheap at the 7-11 not so much.

However, I have bought bad memory which sucks the big one. So I went to my favorite Scan My Computer And Tell Me What I Need website and it gave me really confusing info. It basically said that adding another 1GB to this machine (that already has 1) would not help a bit. ???

So I did a screen grab of the results and sent it to my brother for a professional option. His professional opinion is that 'he has a guy, send me the machine details and I'll call 'im'

We've long had a running joke about my having credit at his shop. $105.24. I think I sent him too much shipping money once or something. Anyway, I just got an email from him saying he was going to send me 2 2GB sticks that magically come to the exact amount of $105.24. I should watch the mail.

Happy dancing here.

And, appropo of none of this, there is a cop on the Front Door TV Network. Do you think they have finally found me out?

Windows (both XP and Vista) will not see the entire 4GB unless you're running the 64-bit versions. If you're running the 32-bit versions, you'll only see somewhere around 3.1 to 3.5 GB. It won't hurt anything to run the 32-bit versions and have 4GB mounted, your machine simply won't see the entire amount. So don't freak out when you install it if it only shows 3.something for the memory size.

As for whether or not it will make a difference...depends. If you do any image or video editing or you play a lot of movies, etc, yes, it will make a difference. If your main stuff is a word processor, for instance, then not so much.

Memory is so gosh-darn cheap right now that being a memory slut is not a bad thing. And "My computer has more memory than it can actually use" is always better than "My computer just crashed because it didn't have enough memory, and it took 6 hours of work with it!" I only brought it up because I know a number of people who have thought something was seriously wrong when 32-bit Windows under reported their memory.

I was just having a conversation this morning with a client about how I remember once paying $200 just to buy an additional 4 meg of ram for my very first Windows PC.

Yeah, I remember those. If someone left a tube of them on my desk at the time I wouldn't have encouraged their return either, even if it was my mother or bestest best friend who left them there :-)
